Fascinating place to see million year old trees! I’d recommend visiting the museum in Sigri first to understand the petrification process which will make the trail more enjoyable. Recommendation it to get there at least 2h before closing time (4pm).

À l’extrémité ouest reculée de Lesbos, près du paisible village de Sigri, se trouve l’un des monuments naturels les plus extraordinaires d’Europe : une vaste forêt pétrifiée s’étendant à travers le paysage volcanique de l’intérieur de l’île. Formée il y a environ 20 millions d’années lorsque des éruptions volcaniques ont enseveli une ancienne forêt subtropicale sous des couches de cendres et de lave, les arbres se sont progressivement minéralisés au fil des millénaires, leur matière organique remplacée molécule par molécule par de la silice jusqu’à ce qu’ils se transforment en pierre. Ce qui reste aujourd’hui sont des troncs fossilisés dressés, des rondins tombés et des systèmes racinaires exposés qui confèrent aux collines une qualité étrange et intemporelle — une forêt figée en plein souffle, préservée avec un détail extraordinaire, y compris la texture de l’écorce et le grain du bois.
Le parc de la forêt pétrifiée de Sigri sert de porte d’entrée pour explorer ce remarquable patrimoine géologique. Le site est géré en lien avec le Musée d’histoire naturelle de la forêt pétrifiée de Lesbos à Sigri, et le parc lui-même permet aux visiteurs de se promener parmi les spécimens fossilisés dans leur cadre naturel — disséminés sur un terrain dégagé avec des vues s’étendant jusqu’à la mer Égée. Une signalétique interprétative aide à contextualiser ce que vous voyez, transformant ce qui pourrait sembler n’être que de curieuses pierres en une histoire cohérente sur le climat ancien, la géologie catastrophique et le temps profond.
Une visite ici récompense ceux qui sont prêts à faire le voyage dans l’ouest moins fréquenté de Lesbos. Le paysage est sauvage et peu peuplé, la lumière dramatique et le silence profond. Que vous approchiez depuis Sigri ou depuis Pedino à travers les collines vallonnées, le parc offre quelque chose de rare dans le voyage moderne : un véritable émerveillement face à l’échelle du temps géologique, associé au simple plaisir de déambuler dans un musée à ciel ouvert qu’aucune main humaine n’a créé.

À quoi s'attendre
Le parc vous plonge dans un silence troublant : des troncs fossilisés se dressent à des angles insolites sur le flanc de colline dégagé, leurs veines de bois et leurs motifs d'écorce figés dans la silice, tandis que des spécimens couchés révèlent des systèmes racinaires étalés au sol. Les panneaux d'interprétation vous donnent le vocabulaire pour lire ce que vous observez — couches volcaniques, fibres minéralisées, cernes de croissance conservés depuis 20 millions d'années.
Quand y aller
Le printemps (avril–mai) et le début de l'automne sont les périodes idéales ; le site est entièrement exposé au soleil et la chaleur estivale sur cette colline ouverte peut être intense.
Comment s'y rendre
Sigri se trouve à l'extrémité ouest de Lesbos, à environ une heure et demie à deux heures de route depuis Mytilène par des chemins ruraux sinueux ; le parc est situé juste à la sortie du village.

One of the most fascinating places you must see in the world. It makes you realize how small and insignificant human life is when compared to nature — like a mere drop of water. The presence of these millions-of-years-old petrified trees stands in stark contrast to the brief moment humanity occupies in Earth’s history. The entrance fee is €10, and I highly recommend taking your children as well. There's a short 20-minute tour, and also a longer, 1-hour tour available.

Fascinating place to visit. The museam and the site in the hills above sigri is included in the one ticket. Staff at the centre were very knowledgeable and had a very enjoyable day

Fantastic historical place starting at the drive down to the museum, with petrified trees along the road. At the museum the tour will start with a short lesson about the different species of trees in the area and why the park of Sigri is so special

Well presented park that shows off the petrified forest really well. Very helpful staff and only 5 Euros entry. When you turn off the main road keep going until the very end - it’s a bit longer than you think!

The BEST part of the petrified forest! Absolutely worth the visit. The path’s are incredibly well maintained and it’s just a great experience to walk around in such a historical place + incredibly breathtaking (literally) mountain views. The place is really well advertised as on the way to go to Sigri, suddenly there’s many signs indicating‘petrified forest’. For a moment you think you might be lost, but keep on driving!

This is an amazing petrified forest in the middle of nowhere (but within the Geopark). This is supposed to be Lesvos’ top attraction but seems so unsupported for such a fabulous place. Way better than I imagined. The petrified tress are amazing to look at, and the area is great to wander around. There is a set clearly marked footpath to take to ensure you see all the exhibits. There is also lots more of them than I thought there would be, and so better preserved than I imagined. It’s wonderful to see. The area takes about an hour or so to wander around and see the trees/trunks, although there is a short or long route depending on how long you want to walk around. There is no café/drinks area in the park so make sure you bring your own refreshments. There are toilets but they are holes in the ground (in cubicles of course) so be prepared. The staff running the park are young and highly engaged and enthusiastic and really welcome questions from visitors.

An amazing experience. Nice boat ride from Sigri village to the Geopark Nisiopi island. A hike across the island stopping on the way viewing various petrified trees. Tour guide was very nice and have us a nice synopsis history of the island and how the trees became petrified. Amazing views and great walking path. Hike ends at the other side of the island. All in ask, your lasted 1.5 hours.
