Maden Island, which you can reach by walking across the sea from Cunda Island, is a must-visit. Walking on the sea and crossing to another island was incredibly enjoyable.

Ο Πύργος Πορδοσελήνης οφείλει το όνομά του σε δύο διαφορετικά ιστορικά στρώματα που συνυπάρχουν σε αυτή την αεροδαρμένη γωνιά της βορειοδυτικής Λέσβου. Η Πορδοσελήνη είναι ένα αρχαίο τοπωνύμιο που κατέγραψαν οι κλασικοί γεωγράφοι για να περιγράψουν αυτό το τμήμα της ακτογραμμής και τα γύρω νησίδια — ένα όνομα που παραπέμπει στις βαθιές ρίζες του νησιού στον αιγαιακό κόσμο της αρχαιότητας. Η λέξη kulesi είναι τουρκική για πύργος, και μας θυμίζει ότι το κτίσμα που συναντά ο επισκέπτης σήμερα χρονολογείται από τη μακρά οθωμανική περίοδο που διαμόρφωσε τη Λέσβο από το 1462 έως την επανένωση με την Ελλάδα το 1912. Οι Οθωμανοί διοικητές έκτιζαν παρατηρητήρια και μικρά φρούρια σε εκτεθειμένες ακτές σε όλο το Αιγαίο, για να παρακολουθούν τη θαλάσσια κυκλοφορία, να προφυλάσσονται από πειρατές και να μεταδίδουν προειδοποιήσεις στους εσωτερικούς οικισμούς. Ο πύργος αυτός εξυπηρετούσε ακριβώς αυτόν τον στρατηγικό σκοπό σε μια ακτή που είναι στραμμένη προς την ανοιχτή θάλασσα και τις προσβάσεις από την Ανατολή.
Το φρούριο καταλαμβάνει θέση που δεσπόζει με απέραντη θέα στην παράκτια ζώνη και τη θάλασσα, επιλεγμένη με την πρακτική λογική που διείπε όλες τις οθωμανικές παράκτιες οχυρώσεις. Αν και σεμνό σε κλίμακα σε σύγκριση με το μεγαλοπρεπές Γενουατικό κάστρο της Μυτιλήνης, κατασκευές σαν αυτή αποτελούσαν τη ραχοκοκαλιά του αμυντικού δικτύου του νησιού — μέρος μιας αλυσίδας παρατηρητηρίων που μπορούσαν να μεταδίδουν προειδοποιήσεις ταχύτατα σε όλο το νησί. Η τοιχοποιία αντικατοπτρίζει τις οθωμανικές στρατιωτικές οικοδομικές παραδόσεις, προσαρμοσμένες στην τοπική πέτρα και στο ανάγλυφο του εδάφους, ενώ ο χώρος διατηρεί αρκετά από την αρχική του μορφή ώστε να αποδίδει την κλίμακα και τον χαρακτήρα αυτών των οριακών εγκαταστάσεων.
Σήμερα, ο Πύργος Πορδοσελήνης ανταμείβει τους επισκέπτες που καταβάλλουν την προσπάθεια να τον επισκεφθούν με μια ατμόσφαιρα ήσυχης ιστορικής απήχησης και εξαιρετικό φυσικό τοπίο. Η γύρω περιοχή της βορειοδυτικής ακτής της Λέσβου είναι από τις πιο εντυπωσιακές του νησιού, με βραχώδη ακρωτήρια, αραιούς ελαιώνες και το βαθύ μπλε του Αιγαίου που απλώνεται έως τον ορίζοντα. Είναι ένα μέρος όπου η πολύστρωτη ταυτότητα του νησιού — αρχαιοελληνική, βυζαντινή, γενουατική, οθωμανική και νεοελληνική — γίνεται ιδιαίτερα απτή, χαραγμένη στις ίδιες τις πέτρες και στο αρχαίο όνομα που ο πύργος εξακολουθεί να φέρει.

Ο πύργος βρίσκεται σε ένα άγριο, ανεμοδαρμένο ακρωτήριο όπου γίνεται αμέσως κατανοητή η στρατηγική λογική των Οθωμανών κτιστών του — τίποτα δεν κινείται στις θαλάσσιες οδούς από την Ανατολή χωρίς να γίνεται αντιληπτό από εδώ. Το τοπίο με τους βραχώδεις λόφους και τις αραιές ελαιώνες είναι από τα πιο απομακρυσμένα του νησιού. Προετοιμαστείτε για ερημιά, χωρίς εγκαταστάσεις, αλλά με ένα από τα πιο εντυπωσιακά πανοράματα της Λέσβου.
Καλύτερη εποχή
Η άνοιξη και οι αρχές του φθινοπώρου είναι ιδανικές· το καλοκαίρι είναι ζεστό και εκτεθειμένο, σχεδόν χωρίς σκιά.
Πώς θα φτάσετε
Από τη Μυτιλήνη, οδηγείτε βορειοδυτικά προς την άκρη του νησιού — υπολογίστε περίπου μία ώρα ή και περισσότερο ανάλογα με τη διαδρομή. Ρωτήστε τοπικά για την κατάσταση του δρόμου πριν ξεκινήσετε, καθώς το τελευταίο τμήμα μπορεί να είναι ανώμαλο.

It has a very beautiful view, but climbing it can be a bit dangerous if you don't have the necessary equipment. However, the path to the island, the ancient tower, the other abandoned houses on the island, and the bay at the other end of the island are worth seeing. As a side note; be careful of sinkholes and depressions on the way up, some of them are meters deep. Also, finding the path to the top is not very easy.

Walking to the mining island and then the tower.. This place is so beautiful.. like two different seas.. The sea was cold in Ören, we swam here at 7 in the morning, it was warm.. Small beautiful bays.. The roads are bad, maybe it's a good thing they are bad, they are places that can get dirty quickly..

Pordoselene Tower is a very impressive structure that carries historical traces to the present day, located at one of the highest points of Cunda Island, off the coast of Ayvalık. Located among the ruins of the ancient city of Pordoselene, this tower fascinates those who see it with both its archaeological and cultural value. Visitors can both breathe in the historical atmosphere and watch the breathtaking view of Cunda and the Aegean Sea from a bird's eye view. Although it requires some effort to walk up since it is located on a hill, the view you see when you reach it is worth all the fatigue. It is a must-see spot, especially for photography enthusiasts and history enthusiasts. Although there are limited informative signs around it, the texture of the region is quite impressive. I definitely recommend everyone who comes to Cunda Island to add Pordoselene Tower to their route; both a walk in touch with nature and a stop alone with history await you.

We drove a certain distance and then went trekking. Be aware that the road by car is unpaved and difficult. By September 25th, it had become a pristine area. There was nobody around; you could swim wherever you wanted. We couldn't walk to the tower. We couldn't cross between the two mountains because the water level had risen. There was only the sound of silence; I thought it was magnificent.

Another place where you can't get enough of the Aegean Sea. There's a waist-deep stone path between it and Cunda Island. Crossing can be quite enjoyable in the summer, but in winter, combined with the cold, it becomes impossible. It has clear and unspoiled surrounding bays; the paths leading from the land may be closed. If you have a boat, you can explore it.

The road is dirt by car, but it's difficult if your vehicle is low. There are fishermen on the shore. I didn't cross over, I turned back halfway, but you can easily cross with water shoes. You need to be careful of sea urchins, there are plenty of them, and you can see the bottom of the sea anyway.
