Nascosto nell’incantevole villaggio montano di Agiasos, il Cafes sthn Xoboli – il cui nome evoca l’amata tradizione greca del komboloi, il filo di grani da scorrere tra le dita, da sempre simbolo di una malinconica e pacata contemplazione – è esattamente il tipo di locale che cattura lo spirito senza fretta di Lesbo. Agiasos stessa è uno dei borghi più caratteristici dell’isola, un labirinto di viuzze acciottolate, case in pietra neoclassiche e una vivace scena culturale che per generazioni ha nutrito poeti, musicisti e pensatori. Qui un caffè non è semplicemente un posto dove bere un caffè: è il salotto della comunità, un palcoscenico per la conversazione e per il quieto trascorrere delle ore pomeridiane.
Chi entra può aspettarsi tutto il piacere sensoriale dell’atmosfera di un kafenìo greco tradizionale – caffè greco forte servito in tazzine, magari un frappé nelle giornate più calde, e quei dolci fatti in casa o piccoli stuzzichini che ricordano come il cibo qui sia ancora preparato con cura. L’ambiente, sia esso all’interno in un caratteristico locale in pietra o ai tavolini all’aperto dove la vita del villaggio si svolge intorno a Lei, offre un posto in prima fila per assistere ai ritmi autentici di Lesbo. Qui il tempo rallenta, ed è proprio questo il punto.
Per i viaggiatori che esplorano Agiasos dopo aver visitato il celebre monastero della Panagia di Agiasos o dopo aver girovagato per il famoso quartiere del bazar medievale del villaggio, una sosta al Cafes sthn Xoboli rappresenta una pausa naturale e gratificante. È il genere di posto in cui ci si siede per un caffè e ci si ritrova lì ancora un’ora dopo, a guardare il mondo che scorre piacevolmente – il che, in un’isola ricca di anima come Lesbo, è un modo perfettamente valido per trascorrere un pomeriggio.

Cosa aspettarsi
Il nome richiama il komboloi, la catenina di perle greca simbolo di riflessione tranquilla, e il locale mantiene esattamente quella promessa: caffè greco ristretto in piccole tazze, tavolini sul selciato e la vita del villaggio che scorre attorno senza fretta. Dopo aver esplorato il quartiere del bazar o il monastero, ci si siede qui per un momento e si rimane ben più a lungo.
Periodo migliore
La primavera e l'inizio dell'autunno sono il momento migliore; d'estate Agiasos ospita feste vivaci, quindi chi cerca tranquillità dovrebbe evitare i fine settimana di punta.
Come arrivare
Agiasos si raggiunge da Mitilene in circa 30 minuti di auto, risalendo verso sudovest attraverso i boschi di castagni del centro di Lesbo — la segnaletica è chiara per tutto il percorso fino al quartiere antico.

This is an amazing cafe, very traditional and serves the food and coffee in traditional ceramic ware. We had the cheese pie, which has to be the best I have ever tasted..filo made with real butter, and different cheeses made this very filling. Such an amazing vibe filled place opposite the church of the Virgin.

A traditional greek coffee shop with a very cozy ambience- especially in the winter. You can have very good coffee and local drinks. I've had Kainari (winter cinnamon drink), there's also Soumada and Salepi to try and plenty of other options. Cakes are freshly baked and their baklava was so good that it was worth driving back & forth from Mytilene just to eat it.

A beautiful traditional newly renovated cafe straight across the main entrance of the church, greek coffee served in locally handcrafted and painted clay cups, do take a peek inside to see old vintage decor adorning the walls and where the coffee is made- our experience was ruined by the unfriendly, sour faced girl working there after lunchtime obviously quiet time for Agiassos, plenty of cafes to choose from all around the Panagia - sunnier on the other side if you decide to walk around

Nice place and nice service, we had an authentic experience by being in this cafe. It’s in front of the main church. They have only sweet food and it goes well with their nice coffee and local varieties of tea. As it is Oxi day, the small Center of the village was full of families enjoying a coffee after the parade which was also nice.

The best "real" traditional cafeteria (in Greek Kafenion) in Lesvos island. Here you can drink the tradition Greek coffee boiled in ashes. Also they have handmade sweets of various fruits depend on period. This one located just in the front of famous Madonna's church of Agiasos.

You absolutely must get the greek coffee here. And you have to go in and watch the owner cook it using olive pits! Also ask for the daily special desserts. We had "bougatsa"and "moustalevria" and they were both delicious and fresh!
