La Chiesa dei Panmegiston Tassiarchi — dedicata ai sommi Arcangeli Michele e Gabriele, noti nell'Ortodossia greca come Taxiarchai, i comandanti delle schiere celesti — sorge come cuore spirituale del villaggio di Asomatos, nel verde entroterra di Lesbo. Il nome stesso del villaggio circostante, Asomatos, che significa 'gli incorporei', è di per sé un epiteto tradizionale per gli angeli, e questo profondo legame linguistico tra luogo e fede testimonia quanto profondamente la venerazione degli Arcangeli abbia plasmato l'identità di questa comunità. Tali dedicazioni sono tra le più amate nell'Ortodossia greca, e le chiese che portano questo titolo si trovano spesso in luoghi elevati o prominenti, riflettendo la credenza che gli Arcangeli fungano da guardiani celesti che vegliano sulla terra sottostante. Dal punto di vista architettonico, la chiesa segue i modelli dell'edilizia ecclesiastica post-bizantina comuni nelle isole dell'Egeo, con spesse mura in pietra, una facciata modesta ma dignitosa e un interno progettato per attirare lo sguardo verso l'iconostasi. Entrando, i visitatori si troveranno immersi nell'atmosfera contemplativa tipica delle chiese ortodosse di villaggio, dove le lampade votive diffondono una calda luce sulle icone e l'aria porta il lieve profumo di cera d'api e incenso. L'iconostasi, che separa la navata dal santuario, è il punto focale dell'interno, e le icone degli Arcangeli — spesso raffigurati in abiti militari bizantini, con spade o scettri — sono centrali nella vita devozionale della chiesa. La festa principale dei Taxiarchai cade l'otto novembre, e nei villaggi di tutta la Grecia questo giorno viene celebrato con liturgie, raduni comunitari e il calore particolare di una panegyri locale. Per chi visita la zona di Asomatos, la chiesa offre un momento di quiete riflessione e un incontro genuino con la viva tradizione ortodossa che ha plasmato la vita dell'Egeo per secoli. Che arriviate durante la festa o in un pomeriggio qualunque, la Panmegiston Tassiarchi è un luogo in cui il patrimonio spirituale e culturale dell'isola si sente vicino e senza fretta.

Cosa aspettarsi
Il villaggio di Asomatos abbraccia silenziosamente questa chiesa in pietra, e il suo stesso nome — 'gli incorporei', antico epiteto per gli angeli — aggiunge alla visita un significato inaspettato. All'interno, le lampade votive illuminano l'iconostasi e nell'aria aleggia un lieve profumo di cera e incenso, l'atmosfera raccolta tipica delle chiese ortodosse di villaggio ancora frequentate da fedeli.
Periodo migliore
La festa dei Taxiarchi, l'8 novembre, è occasione di liturgia solenne e di una piccola festa paesana; per visitare l'interno verdeggiante di Lesbo con clima gradevole, la primavera e l'autunno sono ideali.
Come arrivare
Asomatos si trova a circa 14 chilometri da Mitilene percorrendo le colline del centro dell'isola — un tragitto panoramico di circa 25-30 minuti. La chiesa sorge nel cuore del villaggio ed è facilmente individuabile dall'ingresso principale.

10 minutes from the city of Mytilene in the Kagiani area is the Church of the Archangels, which is a must-visit! Beautiful church, ancient icons and in the courtyard there is a cafe and refreshments... the church is a "miniature", if I may say so, of the Mantamada monastery... truly awe-inspiring and awe-inspiring... it is worth going up for a pilgrimage...

6 km from the city, on a hill in Kagiani, is the Church of the Great Archangels. In a place with an incredible view that you can see all the way to the port of Mytilene. The church with a great history, dominates and looks over all of Mytilene. Inside the church there are also the footprints of the Archangel that you can see. An imposing church and then you can drink your coffee with an incredible view. It is worth visiting.

A beautiful church, in the style of the churches of Lesvos, it is quite reminiscent of Mantamado. It is logically not as imposing as that one, it lacks the famous icon, but it is beautiful there too

It's a really nice church, well-maintained and it's open to visitors. It has a square outside of the church and a tap if you need water. It also has a cafeteria if you'd like to sit and have something to drink /eat.

When you are in Mytilene, 6 km from the city, the Temple of Taxiarches is located on a hill in Kagiani. In a place with an incredible view that you can see all the way to the port of Mytilene. The temple with a great history, dominates and looks over the whole of Mytilene. Inside the temple there are also the footprints of Taxiarches that you can see. Right outside the temple there is a cafe where you can sit and enjoy your coffee, seeing the beautiful view of the city and the sea. It is worth a visit to Taxiarches both as a pilgrimage and as a walk.💯

We visited this church courtyard on the way home from a restaurant. There had been a christening earlier and so there were lots of people still around. There's a really good view of the Aegean from here....it's almost worth thinking about attending an actual service!
