Simply beautiful. You get a view of the whole town plus visit a blessed, timeless Greek Orthodox Church. NOTE....you have to WALK UP. Park the car in the local car park. NO CARS go up or near. Lovely walk via the town shops.

Arroccata in cima a un'imponente roccia monolitica che si erge per circa trenta metri dal centro del villaggio, la Chiesa della Vergine Maria Glykophilousa è uno dei luoghi più iconici e immediatamente riconoscibili dell'isola di Lesbo. È questa grande roccia nuda che ha dato il nome al villaggio di Petra, sulla costa settentrionale, e la chiesa che la incorona ha attirato per secoli pellegrini e viaggiatori. Per raggiungerla, i visitatori salgono una scalinata di 114 gradini scavati direttamente nella parete rocciosa, una salita costante che ricompensa lo sforzo con una vista spettacolare sulla baia turchese, sui tetti in terracotta sottostanti e sull'ampio Egeo che si estende verso l'orizzonte. La chiesa è dedicata alla Glykophilousa, un venerato tipo iconografico della Vergine Maria in cui è raffigurata in un tenero abbraccio con il Bambino Gesù, guancia contro guancia. Il nome stesso significa qualcosa come "dolcemente baciante" in greco, e l'icona custodita nella chiesa è da tempo oggetto di profonda devozione locale. Costruita nel XVIII secolo, la cappella imbiancata a calce è di dimensioni modeste ma ricca di atmosfera, il suo interno fresco e silenzioso, illuminato dal bagliore delle lampade a olio e profumato di incenso e cera d'api. Gli ex voto lasciati dai fedeli tappezzano le pareti, ognuno una silenziosa testimonianza di preghiere esaudite. Per i visitatori di Petra, la salita alla Glykophilousa è essenzialmente un rito di passaggio. Che si venga come pellegrino, viaggiatore curioso o semplicemente attratti dal panorama, l'esperienza unisce lo sforzo fisico a un autentico senso di arrivo a qualcosa di significativo. La piazza del villaggio sottostante, con i suoi kafenion e le taverne ombreggiate da gelsi, offre un luogo accogliente per riposarsi e assorbire il ritmo tranquillo della vita nella Lesbo settentrionale.

Cosa aspettarsi
I 114 gradini scavati nella roccia viva richiedono un po' di fiato, ma in cima la piccola cappella bianca accoglie Lei con un'aria fresca e raccolta, profumata di incenso e cera d'api, le pareti coperte di ex voto lasciati da generazioni di fedeli. La vista sulla baia turchese e sui tetti color terracotta di Petra, con l'Egeo che si estende fino all'orizzonte, è tra le più belle del nord di Lesbo.
Periodo migliore
La primavera inoltrata (maggio) e l'inizio dell'autunno (settembre–ottobre) sono i momenti migliori per la salita; in piena estate i gradini esposti al sole possono essere molto caldi.
Come arrivare
Petra si trova sulla costa settentrionale, a circa un'ora di guida da Mitilene percorrendo la strada nord. La roccia monolitica con la sua scalinata è impossibile da non notare nel centro del paese.

One of the places in Lesvos that I believe should definitely be visited is the village of Petra; with its narrow streets, seaside charm, and lively atmosphere, it is truly a delightful stop. At the center of the village, the Holy Church of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa, built on top of a massive rock, offers a fascinating experience with both its view and atmosphere.

A place to worship and ponder, a holy place. Went today to pray with my wife and I feel so blessed to be able to get up there. A year and a few days ago have gone by, since the double back fusion surgery, and had no pain or concerns walking up the stairs. She (Virgin Mary) has guided my steps back to this holy place, 34 years after the last time I prayed here and I know she is protecting my steps everyday. Faith is everything!

Such a peaceful place, didn't enter the church. Sat outside, relaxed, listened to the birds and appreciated the view. Fantastic place to see the sunset

Beautiful place, high above the sea. The path to the church are made in rock on which the building are staying. You can feel inner peacuful and sacral feelings inside the church.

Great spot to view Petra from above (114 steps). Inside the small church is also worth a visit. Free to visit, juat tiring 😅

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Absolutely fantastic view and a great place to enjoy the gusts of wind. Climb is easy, views are beautiful and inner plaza is nice.

Spectacular church perched on top of a rock formation in the city of Petra. Climbing from the steps carved out of rocks will give you a hint how difficult it was to construct this magnifient church. The views from the top is breathtaking overlooking the city and the Aegean sea. The grounds are meticulously kept with flowers everywhere. The inside is also lavishly decorated with iconas adorning the walls. It's a must visit if you are in Petra.

You have to visit it when you are in Petra. When you have climbed the stairs, the view is very nice (at daytime, but also at nighttime). At daytime you can enter the church.
