Arroccato tra le colline baciate dal sole vicino all'antica città di Eresos, nella parte occidentale di Lesbo, il Monastero di Pythario è un luogo di quieta gravità spirituale, immerso in un paesaggio di uliveti e dolci ondulazioni che ha plasmato questo angolo dell'isola per millenni. Come molti monasteri dell'isola, funge sia da comunità religiosa vivente che da custode della tradizione ortodossa, con le sue pareti imbiancate a calce e la cappella che offrono un contrasto sorprendente con i verdi profondi e gli ori polverosi della campagna circostante. I visitatori che si avventurano fino a qui vengono ricompensati non solo dal patrimonio religioso, ma da quell'atmosfera serena e senza fretta che attira pellegrini e viandanti verso i monasteri egei da generazioni.
Il monastero si trova a breve distanza da Eresos, uno degli insediamenti più ricchi di storia di Lesbo, celebrato in tutto il mondo antico come luogo di nascita della poetessa Saffo. Una visita a Pythario si accompagna naturalmente all'esplorazione di questo angolo culturalmente ricco dell'isola, offrendo un momento di quiete contemplativa prima o dopo la distesa sabbiosa della spiaggia di Skala Eresou. Il paesaggio circostante è particolarmente bello in primavera, quando i fiori selvatici tappezzano i pendii, e in autunno, quando la raccolta delle olive riempie l'aria di profumi terrosi e la vita locale assume un ritmo senza tempo.
Ai visitatori si raccomanda di vestirsi in modo sobrio, come è consuetudine quando si entra in un sito ortodosso attivo. Anche i visitatori senza una specifica appartenenza religiosa spesso trovano qualcosa di profondamente ristoratore nell'atmosfera del monastero — il lieve profumo di incenso, le antiche icone, il suono del vento tra gli alberi vicini. Pythario è un promemoria che Lesbo non è solo un luogo di straordinaria bellezza naturale, ma anche sedimentato da secoli di fede e memoria culturale, e che alcune delle esperienze più significative dell'isola si trovano ben lontane dai sentieri turistici battuti.

Cosa aspettarsi
Arroccato su colline assolate sopra gli uliveti di Ereso, il monastero di Pythario offre un raccoglimento autentico — mura imbiancate, icone antiche e un tenue profumo d'incenso che permane nell'aria. Ci si ritrova a rallentare il passo e a sostare più a lungo del previsto, indipendentemente dal proprio credo. Si richiede un abbigliamento sobrio all'ingresso, trattandosi di una comunità ortodossa ancora attiva.
Periodo migliore
La primavera, quando i fiori selvatici ricoprono i pendii, e l'autunno, durante la raccolta delle olive, sono le stagioni più suggestive per una visita.
Come arrivare
Da Mitilene, si percorre la strada verso ovest in direzione di Ereso — il tragitto dura circa un'ora e un quarto, un'ora e mezza. Il monastero si trova vicino al villaggio e può essere facilmente abbinato a una visita alla spiaggia di Skala Eresou nella stessa giornata.

This is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and tranquil places I have had the opportunity to visit. For me, it was an oasis of calm at the end of a tough cycle ride. If that wasn't enough, we also had the privilege of meeting Father Nectarius and having the pleasure of his hospitality. Although nearing the end of our holiday, I finally felt truly at peace. Thank you, Father Nectarious, we will be back next time we visit this beautiful Island.

True beauty does not lie on main roads and beaches. 3 kilometers northeast from Eressos town, turn left onto a dusty gravel road that will reliably lead you past the dam to the breathtaking site of Moni Pithariou. Pater Nektarios waves at you from afar and you have the wonderful feeling that you are welcome guests here. He will accompany you through the beautiful monastery, point out important artefacts, treat you to coffee and over the amazing view of the valley, we will also talk about Prague in the Czech Republic – our place of residence. We thank Pater Nektarios for the kind welcome. Your hospitality and the beauty of the place was one of the best experiences for us on our most beloved Greek island, we will always remember you and we will be happy to come back to greet you again. This is the most Tranquil place on Lesvos, it’s so beautiful and peaceful. We met Father Nectarius who was most welcoming to us ,we sat in the shade with a cold drink enjoying a lovely conversation with him . The Monastery’s grounds, chapel and views are breathtaking, well worth the visit here. We will definitely visit again x

The monastery is considered one of the most decorated on the island. It’s beautiful views give a calm feeling you’re somewhere off the island, but yet on it it’s great for pictures for group tours for kids, and also has great trails to walk on, especially by the lake definitely worth coming here Will come again on a different season to see the different colors of the nature. It’s one of the few spots where there is a lot of green.
