Gelegen in de zonovergoten heuvels bij de oude stad Eresos in het westen van Lesbos, is het Pythario-klooster een plek van stille spirituele ernst, afstekend tegen een landschap van olijfgaarden en glooiende heuvels dat deze hoek van het eiland al millennia vormgeeft. Zoals veel kloosters op het eiland fungeert het als een levende religieuze gemeenschap én als hoeder van de orthodoxe traditie, met zijn witgekalkte muren en kapel die een opvallend contrast vormen met het diepe groen en stoffige goud van het omringende platteland. Bezoekers die de reis hierheen maken, worden niet alleen beloond met religieus erfgoed, maar met de soort serene, rustige sfeer die pelgrims en zwervers al generaties lang naar Egeïsche kloosters trekt.
Het klooster ligt binnen handbereik van Eresos, een van de meest legendarische nederzettingen van Lesbos, in de oudheid alom geprezen als de geboorteplaats van de dichteres Sappho. Een bezoek aan Pythario valt vanzelf samen met een verkenning van deze cultureel rijke uithoek van het eiland, en biedt een moment van contemplatieve stilte voor of na de zanderige uitgestrektheid van het strand van Skala Eresou. Het omringende landschap is bijzonder mooi in de lente, wanneer wilde bloemen de heuvelhellingen bedekken, en in de herfst, wanneer de olijfoogst de lucht vult met aardse geuren en het lokale leven een tijdloos ritme aanneemt.
Bezoekers wordt verzocht zich bescheiden te kleden, zoals gebruikelijk is bij het betreden van een actief orthodox heiligdom. Zelfs bezoekers zonder specifieke religieuze banden ervaren vaak iets diep herstellends in de atmosfeer van het klooster — de vage geur van wierook, de antieke iconen, het geluid van de wind door de nabije bomen. Pythario herinnert eraan dat Lesbos niet alleen een plek is van verbluffende natuurlijke schoonheid, maar ook gelaagd met eeuwen van geloof en culturele herinnering, en dat sommige van de meest zinvolle ervaringen van het eiland ver van de gebaande toeristische paden liggen.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Op zonnige heuvels boven de olijfgaarden bij Eresos biedt het klooster Pythario een sfeer van echte stilte — witte muren, oude iconen en een lichte wierookgeur die in de lucht hangt. U neemt er ongemerkt de tijd om te vertoeven en de eeuwenoude omgeving in u op te nemen. Gepaste kleding is vereist, want de gemeenschap hier beoefent de Orthodoxe traditie nog actief.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Het voorjaar, wanneer wilde bloemen de omliggende hellingen bedekken, en de herfst, tijdens de olijvenoogst, zijn de mooiste seizoenen voor een bezoek.
Hoe er te komen
Vanuit Mytilini rijdt u westwaarts richting Eresos — reken op ongeveer een uur en een kwartier tot anderhalf uur rijden. Het klooster ligt vlak bij het dorp en laat zich goed combineren met een bezoek aan het strand van Skala Eresou op dezelfde dag.

This is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and tranquil places I have had the opportunity to visit. For me, it was an oasis of calm at the end of a tough cycle ride. If that wasn't enough, we also had the privilege of meeting Father Nectarius and having the pleasure of his hospitality. Although nearing the end of our holiday, I finally felt truly at peace. Thank you, Father Nectarious, we will be back next time we visit this beautiful Island.

True beauty does not lie on main roads and beaches. 3 kilometers northeast from Eressos town, turn left onto a dusty gravel road that will reliably lead you past the dam to the breathtaking site of Moni Pithariou. Pater Nektarios waves at you from afar and you have the wonderful feeling that you are welcome guests here. He will accompany you through the beautiful monastery, point out important artefacts, treat you to coffee and over the amazing view of the valley, we will also talk about Prague in the Czech Republic – our place of residence. We thank Pater Nektarios for the kind welcome. Your hospitality and the beauty of the place was one of the best experiences for us on our most beloved Greek island, we will always remember you and we will be happy to come back to greet you again. This is the most Tranquil place on Lesvos, it’s so beautiful and peaceful. We met Father Nectarius who was most welcoming to us ,we sat in the shade with a cold drink enjoying a lovely conversation with him . The Monastery’s grounds, chapel and views are breathtaking, well worth the visit here. We will definitely visit again x

The monastery is considered one of the most decorated on the island. It’s beautiful views give a calm feeling you’re somewhere off the island, but yet on it it’s great for pictures for group tours for kids, and also has great trails to walk on, especially by the lake definitely worth coming here Will come again on a different season to see the different colors of the nature. It’s one of the few spots where there is a lot of green.
