Mandamados is een van de weinige dorpen op Lesbos met een levende traditie van keramiekambacht, en het atelier van Stelios Stamatis is een bewijs van dat erfgoed. Het dorp wordt al lang geassocieerd met de productie van aardewerk, de kleirijke grond en generaties bekwame handen hebben geleid tot een lokale ambachtsidentiteit die tot op de dag van vandaag standhoudt. Hier stoppen betekent kennismaken met werk dat op de oude manier is gemaakt — gevormd, gebakken en afgewerkt door één ambachtsman die zijn werkzame leven aan het medium heeft gewijd.
In het atelier kunnen bezoekers handgemaakte keramiek bekijken en kopen, variërend van functionele alledaagse stukken tot decoratieve werken met de esthetiek van de Egeïsche Zee. De stukken weerspiegelen zowel traditionele vormen als de creatieve stem van de maker, en bieden iets persoonlijkers en gewortelds dan de massaproductie souvenirs die je elders op het eiland in toeristenwinkels vindt. Kijken naar of praten met de keramist, als hij aan het werk is, voegt een dimensie toe die maar weinig reiservaringen kunnen evenaren — het rustige ritme van een ambacht dat met zorg en zonder haast wordt uitgeoefend.
Voor iedereen die het noorden van Lesbos verkent, is een bezoek hier vanzelfsprekend te combineren met het nabijgelegen Klooster van de Taxiarchis, waardoor Mandamados een lonende halve-dagstop is. Een stuk uit dit atelier mee naar huis nemen betekent niet alleen een voorwerp meenemen, maar een fragment van de materiële cultuur van het eiland — iets dat met de hand is gemaakt, in een dorp dat het maken nog steeds waardeert.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Het atelier is een kleine, rustige ruimte waar planken vol geglazuurde en terracotta stukken — kommen, kruiken, decoratieve borden — de sfeer bepalen van een echte werkplaats. Als Stelios aan het draaien is wanneer u aankomt, kunt u toekijken hoe de klei langzaam zijn vorm krijgt in bijna volledige stilte. Elk stuk dat u hier aanschaft is door één paar handen gemaakt en draagt de signatuur van een levende, lokale ambachtskunst.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Lente en vroege herfst zijn het prettigst voor een bezoek; u vermijdt de zomerhitte en kunt het eenvoudig combineren met het nabijgelegen klooster.
Hoe er te komen
Mandamados ligt ongeveer 45 minuten rijden van Mytilini, via Kalloni naar het noorden en vervolgens oostwaarts naar het dorp.

We came here with a group of 7 pupils from Germany and their teacher. Stelios showed us how to make pottery on the potter's wheel and each of us could give it a try. It was a great experience. The work of his family is great. We bought some very nice souvenirs.

Great place for ceramics. The owners were wonderful and took the time to explain how they made their wares. Even took the time to allow me to use machine to try my hand making a clay pot. Prices are very reasonable and they even gave me a gift for being a patron.
