Dominando il promontorio sopra il porto settentrionale di Mitilene, il Castello di Mitilene è una delle fortezze medievali più grandi e impressionanti dell'Egeo. Le sue origini risalgono all'epoca bizantina, quando il sito fu fortificato per la prima volta per proteggere il porto naturale dell'isola, ma il castello assunse la sua attuale grandiosa forma in gran parte sotto la dinastia genovese dei Gattelusi, che governarono Lesbo dalla metà del XIV secolo fino alla conquista ottomana nel 1462. I Gattelusi ampliarono e rafforzarono le mura, le torri e le strutture interne, lasciando un'eredità architettonica stratificata che riflette secoli di importanza strategica al crocevia del Mediterraneo orientale.
Oggi, camminare attraverso il castello è un viaggio attraverso storie sovrapposte. Le massicce mura esterne racchiudono un'ampia area sulla cima della collina dove i visitatori possono esplorare le rovine di chiese bizantine, aggiunte di epoca ottomana e i resti di cisterne che un tempo sostenevano una comunità fortificata autosufficiente. Dalle mura, i panorami sono mozzafiato: la città di Mitilene si estende in basso, la costa turca luccica all'orizzonte a pochi chilometri a est, e il porto che generazioni di marinai e conquistatori hanno apprezzato si allunga in entrambe le direzioni. L'interno ombreggiato dai pini del castello offre una fuga fresca e suggestiva dal caldo estivo della città sottostante.
Per ogni visitatore di Lesbo, il Castello di Mitilene è una tappa essenziale che ancora la lunga e stratificata storia dell'isola. Non si erge come un pezzo da museo, ma come un monumento vivo, aperto agli elementi e all'immaginazione — un luogo dove il peso dell'ambizione bizantina, del commercio genovese e della potenza ottomana può essere sentito nella pietra sotto i vostri piedi. Che veniate per la storia, i panorami o semplicemente per la quieta grandiosità del luogo, il castello ricompensa la breve salita dal centro città con una delle esperienze più suggestive che l'isola abbia da offrire.

Cosa aspettarsi
Dalle merlature si abbraccia con lo sguardo il porto di Mitilene in basso e, nelle giornate limpide, la costa turca a pochi chilometri a est — lo stesso panorama su cui si calcolavano le difese bizantine e genovesi. All'interno delle mura lo spazio è sorprendentemente ampio e spesso tranquillo: cappelle diroccate, aggiunte ottomane e antiche cisterne si alternano tra pini che regalano ombra nelle ore più calde.
Periodo migliore
Da aprile a giugno e da settembre a ottobre le condizioni sono ideali per esplorare la collina all'aperto; in luglio e agosto il caldo sulle creste esposte può essere intenso.
Come arrivare
Il castello si trova a circa 15 minuti a piedi in salita dal centro di Mitilene, oppure a pochi minuti in auto o taxi fino all'ingresso sul promontorio nord.

Castle is awesome. You can still walk on many of the walls and the crypt. Cheap for a great historic spot!

While the place offers a beautiful view and is rich in history, the entrance instructions were not very clear. In addition, there were not enough signs or explanations about the artifacts. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit, but there’s room for improvement. Tickets were free for under 18, and costs €5 for adults.

We were there on Monday after 5 p.m. and it was closed. The main castle is under renovation and is surrounded by scaffolding. Mino, it is worth taking a walk along the alley to admire the beautiful views

A very large and magnificent castle offers a delightful experience of watching the sea view from its forts. However, it closes early, so it is advisable to check the timings before planning a visit.

Very nice place. Historically valuable, many castle walls and rooms have now been restored. Some buildings are still being restored (August 2024). A good overview of the city, you can make good photos. Entrance costs 3 euros per person, the castle is open until three o'clock, but I recommend visiting it from the very morning before the scorching sun.

I cycled from the centre to the castle and left my bike at the entrance with the guard who happily accommodated me and offered advice on how to make the most of my visit. It was Christmas time and rather quiet but sunny, bright and warm. The view from the castle is breathtaking.

Visited in early March. I was the only visitor there. Entrance fee was 1 euro which is definitely worth it. I was entertained for quite some time. The view from the castle is amazing! There are some really interesting buildings within the area so take your time to explore it all.
