About
Dominating the promontory above Mytilene's northern harbor, the Castle of Mytilene is one of the largest and most impressive medieval fortresses in the Aegean. Its origins reach back to Byzantine times, when the site was first fortified to guard the island's natural harbor, but the castle took its present grand form largely under the Genoese Gattelusi dynasty, who ruled Lesvos from the mid-fourteenth century until the Ottoman conquest in 1462. The Gattellusi expanded and strengthened the walls, towers, and inner structures, leaving a layered architectural legacy that reflects centuries of strategic importance at the crossroads of the eastern Mediterranean.
Walking through the castle today is a journey through overlapping histories. The massive outer walls enclose a sprawling hilltop area where visitors can explore the ruins of Byzantine churches, Ottoman-era additions, and the remains of cisterns that once sustained a self-sufficient fortified community. From the ramparts, the views are breathtaking — the town of Mytilene spreads below, the Turkish coastline shimmers on the horizon just a few kilometers to the east, and the harbor that generations of sailors and conquerors prized stretches out in both directions. The castle's pine-shaded interior offers a cool and atmospheric escape from the summer heat of the town below.
For any visitor to Lesvos, the Castle of Mytilene is an essential stop that anchors the island's long and layered story. It stands not as a museum piece but as a living monument open to the elements and to the imagination — a place where the weight of Byzantine ambition, Genoese commerce, and Ottoman power can all be felt in the stone beneath your feet. Whether you come for the history, the panoramic views, or simply the quiet grandeur of the place, the castle rewards the short climb from the town center with one of the most evocative experiences the island has to offer.
Before you go
What to expect
Standing on the ramparts, you can look down over Mytilene's rooftops and across the narrow strait to the Turkish coastline a few kilometres east — the same vantage point Byzantine and Genoese commanders once used to calculate their defences. Inside the walls the space is surprisingly large and uncrowded, with crumbling chapels, Ottoman-era stonework, and old cisterns scattered among shading pines that make the ruins feel inhabited rather than staged.
Best time to visit
April through June and September through October offer the most comfortable conditions for the open hilltop; midsummer is hot and exposed, though the pine-shaded interior provides real relief.
How to get there
The castle sits on the promontory above Mytilene's northern harbour, roughly a 15-minute uphill walk from the town centre, or a very short drive or taxi ride to the entrance.

Castle is awesome. You can still walk on many of the walls and the crypt. Cheap for a great historic spot!

While the place offers a beautiful view and is rich in history, the entrance instructions were not very clear. In addition, there were not enough signs or explanations about the artifacts. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit, but there’s room for improvement. Tickets were free for under 18, and costs €5 for adults.

Mytilene castle is a place that is well worth seeing. You have the ancient underground crypts, churches the jail, and some of the best views in Lesvos

We were there on Monday after 5 p.m. and it was closed. The main castle is under renovation and is surrounded by scaffolding. Mino, it is worth taking a walk along the alley to admire the beautiful views

A very large and magnificent castle offers a delightful experience of watching the sea view from its forts. However, it closes early, so it is advisable to check the timings before planning a visit.

Very nice place. Historically valuable, many castle walls and rooms have now been restored. Some buildings are still being restored (August 2024). A good overview of the city, you can make good photos. Entrance costs 3 euros per person, the castle is open until three o'clock, but I recommend visiting it from the very morning before the scorching sun.

I cycled from the centre to the castle and left my bike at the entrance with the guard who happily accommodated me and offered advice on how to make the most of my visit. It was Christmas time and rather quiet but sunny, bright and warm. The view from the castle is breathtaking.

Visited in early March. I was the only visitor there. Entrance fee was 1 euro which is definitely worth it. I was entertained for quite some time. The view from the castle is amazing! There are some really interesting buildings within the area so take your time to explore it all.
