Nascosta tra le colline verdeggianti vicino al tranquillo villaggio di Revma, la Cascata di Vathilimno Pterounta è una delle fughe naturali più gratificanti di Lesbo. L'interno occidentale dell'isola riceve abbondanti piogge invernali che alimentano una rete di ruscelli e gole, e Vathilimno è tra i risultati più pittoreschi di questo paesaggio: una cascata che si tuffa in una pozza ombreggiata circondata da platani, canneti e quel tipo di vegetazione lussureggiante che sorprende i visitatori abituati a pensare alle isole dell'Egeo come arse dal sole e brulle. Il nome stesso allude all'ambiente: "vathilimno" evoca acqua profonda e ferma, una promessa che il luogo mantiene in gran parte, soprattutto in primavera quando la portata è al massimo.
Il locale qui funge da base accogliente per vivere la cascata e i suoi dintorni, offrendo ai visitatori un luogo dove fermarsi, ristorarsi e immergersi nel paesaggio dopo la guida tortuosa attraverso le colline. Chi viene per un pasto, una bibita fresca o semplicemente per riposare all'ombra mentre il suono dell'acqua che cade riempie l'aria, trova quel tipo di ospitalità senza fretta e genuinamente locale che definisce il meglio del turismo rurale greco. L'ambiente attira escursionisti che esplorano i sentieri del Lesbo centrale, così come gitanti in cerca di sollievo dalla costa estiva.
Ciò che rende Vathilimno davvero speciale è quanto sembri lontano dai percorsi turistici, pur rimanendo accessibile a qualsiasi viaggiatore disposto ad avventurarsi un po' nell'entroterra. Il paesaggio circostante è ricco di uccelli — Lesbo è celebrata a livello internazionale tra gli ornitologi — e il micro-habitat intorno alla cascata attira specie raramente avvistate altrove sull'isola. Una visita qui, soprattutto se abbinata a un pomeriggio tranquillo nella vicina Revma, offre una finestra sull'anima più silenziosa e verde di Lesbo che molti visitatori non scoprono mai.

Cosa aspettarsi
Il suono dell'acqua la raggiunge prima ancora che la cascata sia visibile — una pozza fresca e ombrosa incorniciata da platani e canneti. Il sito richiama escursionisti e birdwatcher, poiché questo microhabitat ospita specie raramente osservabili altrove su Lesbo. L'esercizio accanto alla cascata offre un pasto o una bevanda fresca con il paesaggio verde come sfondo, invitandola a fermarsi più a lungo.
Periodo migliore
La primavera (aprile–maggio) regala la portata più abbondante e la vegetazione più lussureggiante; l'estate è più fresca e tranquilla rispetto alla costa, anche se la cascata si riduce verso luglio.
Come arrivare
Da Mitilene si procede in direzione nord-ovest verso le colline dell'entroterra — il tragitto richiede circa un'ora e mezza su strade di montagna tortuose. Il villaggio di Revma è il punto di riferimento più vicino.

A bit of a trick from the parking area, but once there it was worth the walk. Absolutely beautiful and if you weren’t aware that it was there, you would never come across it. From the direction that we went, I would say that you would need to be fairly mobile to get down to the waterfall. Make sure you visit Lena’s restaurant in the village we had a fantastic meal there as well.

The Watcher

Probably the best attraction on the island when it comes to nature and it's beautiful colors. There are a few paths one can take, the easiest can be found across from the milk/cheese factory 100 meters towards the turn. It's a must. Make sure you bring a good camera you won't be disappointed. Water is usually all year round. Thank you for reading this review.

This is a lovely waterfall but visitors should be aware to come here, and not follow the other pin, which is in the middle of a lovely nearby village. The village provides some parking options, and you can walk to here from it, but if coming in on foot it's misleading to have a pin for the water anywhere else but here!

The waterfall was dry... very sad. The trek to the waterfall was also quite difficult, not recommended for people who have trouble walking.

If you go in late July there is no water and certainly no waterfall. The path to get there is half without shade, meaning you'll get baked under the hot sun. Perhaps it's better in other seasons but definitely not for the summer. There are other waterfalls that have plenty of water this time of year, such as in Lefkada island.
