Archaia Issa, i resti di un antico insediamento immerso nel tranquillo paesaggio vicino al villaggio di Parakoila, offre una finestra sul stratificato passato preistorico e classico di Lesbo. Sebbene meno celebrata delle cinque grandi città-stato dell'isola — Mitilene, Metimna, Antissa, Ereso e Pirra — Issa testimonia la densità abitativa di quest'isola fertile nell'antichità. Il sito risale a periodi che vanno dall'età del Bronzo all'epoca classica, quando le colline e le pianure costiere di Lesbo ospitavano numerose comunità dedite all'agricoltura, al commercio e alla ricca vita culturale per cui l'isola divenne rinomata in tutto il mondo greco antico. I visitatori che compiono il breve tragitto da Parakoila incontrano la quieta dignità di un paesaggio archeologico dove fondazioni, pietre sparse e terrapieni parlano di un insediamento che ebbe un significato reale per i suoi abitanti. Il terreno circostante — dolci colline che dominano il Golfo di Kalloni — fa comprendere perché questo luogo fu scelto: terra fertile, una vista imponente e la vicinanza alle vie d'acqua che erano le arterie del commercio antico. Frammenti di ceramica e tracce architettoniche rinvenute nell'area suggeriscono un'occupazione prolungata e i ritmi della vita quotidiana antica, piuttosto che la grandiosità monumentale di una grande città. Archaia Issa ricompensa il viaggiatore curioso disposto a cogliere la sottigliezza. Non vi sono colonne imponenti né grandi templi, ma il sito possiede un'atmosfera di autentica antichità, lontano dalla folla turistica, in un paesaggio il cui carattere essenziale è mutato poco nel corso dei millenni. Unito alla visita del vicino villaggio di Parakoila e alle ricchezze più ampie del bacino di Kalloni, offre un incontro silenziosamente memorabile con la profonda storia umana di Lesbo.

Cosa aspettarsi
Camminando tra le fondamenta sparse e i resti in pietra sul versante collinare che domina il Golfo di Kalloni, si percepisce la presenza di una vita antica quotidiana — non grandi templi, ma tracce silenziose di una comunità che coltivò queste terre e commerciò per millenni, dall'età del Bronzo all'epoca classica. Il paesaggio circostante ha mantenuto il suo carattere essenziale, e il panorama sul golfo spiega immediatamente perché questo rilievo fu scelto come insediamento. Porti dell'acqua e la curiosità di leggere un paesaggio piuttosto che ammirare colonne.
Periodo migliore
La primavera (aprile–maggio) e l'inizio dell'autunno (settembre–ottobre) offrono temperature gradevoli e quasi certamente si avrà il sito tutto per sé.
Come arrivare
Da Mitilene si guida verso ovest in direzione di Kalloni — circa un'ora di percorso — e da lì il villaggio di Parakoila è a pochi chilometri; il sito si estende nel paesaggio aperto appena fuori dall'abitato.

I have stayed at the ISSA Lesvos Hostel two times. Three nights in September 2025 and a month now in February 2026. There was not once a moment where I did not feel comfortable, welcomed or unpleasant. Not only was everything always very clean, modern and efficient - the receptionists (Tanya, Katharina and Elena) are so lovely and attentive! They all do such a great job and really care about the experience and comfortableness of their guests. With all three you can have such a great chat but after a conversation with Tanya your heart is full with laughter and light. Thank you guys for such a great time!:)

My family loved our stay at Issa Lesvos - Elena and the staff assisting with reception and room maintenance were so lovely and caring. Our trip to the beautiful and restful Mytilene was greatly complemented by the convenient location, amenities and general homely atmosphere of the building and rooms. We are incredibly keen to return and couldn’t have asked for a better experience during our first trip to Greece!

The premises is located in the most beautiful laneways of Mytilini. The room we stayed in aesthetically pleasing. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be returning in the near future.

Issa Lesvos was hands down one of the best hostels I have had the pleasure of experiencing during my two-years-plus travels. Spacious lounge (with free coffee and tea) and lockers that were accessible before check-in and after check-out; great and spacious room with big lockers (very nice) and good beds; nice breakfast at MK's; and very kind, helpful, and interested staff. If there is any small minus to find, it would be that the downstairs/outside music can be heard rather loud in the room I was staying in (but nothing that earplugs can't keep out). All in all a wonderful experience and highly recommended hostel 🙏😊

Convenient and relaxing hostel with high quality of services. Central location (less than 1 min from central square), immediate response to client's requests and nice decorated space. Highly promote the specific hostel for visitors.

I had an excellent time at ISSA in early November! The rooms and common areas were very nice and well organized and equipped and the staff were really friendly and helpful with everything I needed. It can be noisy during the night on weekends and holidays so earplugs come handy:) totally recommended!!

Probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was great. Room was big and clean and new. The breakfast was a voucher for a local cafe which was also 10/10. Can’t recommend enough.
