We arrived here by boat and it was absolutely stunning. The water is crystal clear, and there’s a unique spot where hot springs flow directly into the sea – an incredible natural experience. One of the most beautiful places we visited in Lesvos, and truly unforgettable!

Ekklisia Krifti, waarvan de naam eenvoudigweg de Verborgen Kerk betekent, doet zijn suggestieve titel eer aan. Weggestopt nabij de stille kustnederzetting Paralia Drotas in het westen van Lesbos, is deze intieme gebedsplaats het soort ontdekking dat reizigers beloont die van de hoofdwegen afwijken. Kleine witgekalkte kapelletjes zoals deze zijn verweven met het landschap van Lesbos; elk is een levend getuigenis van het diepe orthodoxe geloof van het eiland en zijn eeuwenoude traditie van gemeenschappelijke toewijding. Het idee van een verborgen kerk heeft hier gewicht, want zulke heiligdommen waren van oudsher plaatsen van stille toevlucht en lokale vroomheid, vaak alleen bekend bij de families en dorpelingen die ze generaties lang onderhielden. Een bezoek aan Ekklisia Krifti schenkt een moment van oprechte stilte te midden van de natuurlijke schoonheid van deze hoek van Lesbos. Het omliggende platteland bij Paralia Drotas voelt karakteristiek Egeïsch aan, met de zee nooit ver uit het zicht en het onthaaste tempo van een kleine kustgemeenschap die de toon zet. Of de kapel nu open is of slechts van buiten bewonderd wordt, ze nodigt bezoekers uit even te pauzeren, de omgeving in zich op te nemen en de ingetogen spirituele geografie te waarderen die het landelijke Griekse eilandleven bepaalt. Hier halt houden gaat minder om een enkel herkenningspunt en meer om de ervaring van het vinden van iets stilletjes buitengewoons op een bescheiden plek, wat vaak de meest memorabele reisontmoeting is die Lesbos te bieden heeft.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Het kleine, witgekalkte kapelletje staat vlak bij de kustlijn van Paralia Drotas en valt gemakkelijk over het hoofd als u niet weet waarnaar u zoekt. Een paar minuten stilstaan volstaan om de Egeïsche wind te voelen, het open landschap te zien en de rust te proeven van een heiligdom dat generaties lang zorgzaam bewaard werd. Het is minder een bezienswaardigheid dan een welkome pauze onderweg.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Eind lente tot vroeg in de herfst; mei en juni zijn aangenaam warm voordat de hitte van juli en augustus toeslaat in het zuiden van Lesbos.
Hoe er te komen
Vanuit Mytilini rijdt u in zuidwestelijke richting naar Paralia Drotas, een rit van ongeveer 40 tot 50 minuten. Het kapelletje is klein en nauwelijks bewegwijzerd, dus het loont om plaatselijk de weg te vragen.

This place is absolutely stunning! 🌊⛪ To reach it, you drive about 10 minutes on a dirt road, then park and hike another 10 minutes. The walk is totally worth it for the amazing views and peaceful atmosphere. Make sure to bring water and sunscreen if you go on a sunny day. I absolutely recommend visiting!

Feels like paradise!! Crystal clear water, opportunity for dives, nice views, especially if you go on foot but get prepared, photos following of the pathway, cute little church under/inside the rock (that's why it's called hidden church). You can either hike there or take the boat from Melinda or Plomari. In the past, I used to pay 10€ round trip per person, this year cost 20€ and we would have had to wait for other people as well so we preferred the hike. It's a 10' hike but if you do it in the summer, get some extra water and sports shoes, it's steep to go down but once you are there, it feels like paradise 😍 (Check the pictures so you have an idea of the pathway)

One of the most spectacular places I’ve been too on the island. However, be warned if you are planning on hiking and not taking the boat. The descent is decent - however steep and you need to be very careful. The hike back up is insane. Unfortunately we did it in 38 degree weather. It is incredibly steep. Take more water than you think you need, wear enclosed shoes and very light clothing if you go in summer. The road there is also extremely narrow with no rail. I recommend if you really want to see it to get the boat across because I thought I was healthy and fine until I did the hike back and vomited/almost fainted. However the view was worth it but be VERY PREPARED OR OVERLY PREPARED There is also an amazing hot spring but once again couldn’t really go in because the water was scolding hot! There is a bucket to dump water out and replace it with the water from the sea

Hidden gem.. we parked at the beginning of the dirt road for about 2.8 km, each way, only the last couple hundred meters descent required extra attention, but overall not too difficult. You can drive all the way to beginning of the spot where the descent begins and just trek the last couple hundred meters. It’s a beautiful swimming spot. Hot springs but pool was small and full of dead leaves and branches and muddy. Overall an IG worthy spot and great place to chill.

5* nature beauty 5* hiking destination #noaccesdibility Beautiful nature spot with the church and hot springs. Even though as of February 2024 we didn't find any hot springs here, the water in the small pool to the right from the church was hardly warm, and there were waves even with north winds. But the hiking trail is definitely nice to walk, no difficult parts on it, and you can get to the begginyg of the trail by car by tough but still bearable road for one car only with small spots from time to time to let another car pass by. Luckily there were no cars on the way in our case, but I would highly recommend to start walking as soon as off road way starts.

Very isolated and peaceful if you go early in the morning. Natural hot spring coming out of the rock into the sea. Highly recommended, very special place. I walked down and it was just perfect!

From PLOMARI, a short drive to Melinda and a chat to the owners of Maria's Taverna will enable you to hop on a boat for a short 10 min trip to this marvel. Another hidden gem on the island. Highly worth a dive in the pristine waters. Up against the rock face you can feel the warm waters rising and their soothing effect.

A beautiful place to visit during your holidays in Lesvos! I totally recommend it. You can visit it by boat from Vatera or Plomari!
