De kerk Panmegiston Taxiarchon — gewijd aan de opperste aartsengelen Michaël en Gabriël, in de Grieks-orthodoxe traditie bekend als de Taxiarchen, de aanvoerders van de hemelse legerscharen — is het spirituele hart van het dorp Asomatos, in het weelderige binnenland van Lesbos. De naam van het omringende dorp, Asomatos, wat zoveel betekent als "de onstoffelijken", is op zichzelf al een traditioneel epitheton voor de engelen, en deze diepe taalkundige band tussen plaats en geloof getuigt van de alomvattende invloed die de verering van de Aartsengelen heeft gehad op de identiteit van deze gemeenschap. Dergelijke kerkwijdingen behoren tot de meest geliefde in de Grieks-orthodoxe traditie, en kerken met deze naam staan vaak op verheven of markante plaatsen, als uitdrukking van de overtuiging dat de Aartsengelen als hemelse wachters over het land beneden waken.
Architectonisch sluit de kerk aan bij de post-Byzantijnse kerkbouwtraditie die gangbaar is op de Egeïsche eilanden, met dikke stenen muren, een sobere maar waardige gevel en een interieur dat de blik naar binnen trekt, naar de iconostase. Wie naar binnen stapt, betreedt de contemplatieve sfeer die typerend is voor orthodoxe dorpskerken, waar votieflampen een warm schijnsel werpen over de iconen en de lucht licht geurt naar bijenwas en wierook. De iconostase, die het schip van het heiligdom scheidt, is het middelpunt van het interieur, en de iconen van de Aartsengelen — vaak afgebeeld in Byzantijnse militaire kleding, met zwaard of scepter — staan centraal in het devotionele leven van de kerk.
De belangrijkste feestdag van de Taxiarchen valt op de achtste november, en in dorpen door heel Griekenland wordt deze dag gevierd met een liturgie, een gemeenschappelijke bijeenkomst en de bijzondere warmte van een plaatselijk panegyri. Voor bezoekers van de streek rond Asomatos biedt de kerk een stille gelegenheid tot bezinning en een oprechte kennismaking met de levende orthodoxe traditie die het Egeïsche leven al eeuwenlang vorm geeft. Of u nu aankomt tijdens het feest of op een gewone middag, de Panmegiston Taxiarchon is een plek waar het spirituele en culturele erfgoed van het eiland dichtbij en ongehaast aanwezig is.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Het dorpje Asomatos omringt deze stenen kerk in stilte, en de naam zelf — 'de onlichamelijken', een oud epitheton voor de engelen — geeft elk bezoek een bijzondere laag betekenis. Binnen verlichten votieflampjes de iconostase en hangt er een lichte geur van bijenwas en wierook in de lucht, de onbeweeglijke sfeer van een levende orthodoxe dorpskerk waar mensen komen om te bidden.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Het feest van de Taxiarchai op 8 november brengt liturgie en een dorpsfeest; voor een aangenaam rijtochtje door het groene binnenland van Lesbos zijn april tot juni en september-oktober het beste.
Hoe er te komen
Asomatos ligt zo'n 14 kilometer van Mytilini via de centrale heuvels — een schilderachtige rit van ongeveer 25 tot 30 minuten. De kerk bevindt zich midden in het dorp en is goed te zien vanaf de hoofdroute.

10 minutes from the city of Mytilene in the Kagiani area is the Church of the Archangels, which is a must-visit! Beautiful church, ancient icons and in the courtyard there is a cafe and refreshments... the church is a "miniature", if I may say so, of the Mantamada monastery... truly awe-inspiring and awe-inspiring... it is worth going up for a pilgrimage...

6 km from the city, on a hill in Kagiani, is the Church of the Great Archangels. In a place with an incredible view that you can see all the way to the port of Mytilene. The church with a great history, dominates and looks over all of Mytilene. Inside the church there are also the footprints of the Archangel that you can see. An imposing church and then you can drink your coffee with an incredible view. It is worth visiting.

A beautiful church, in the style of the churches of Lesvos, it is quite reminiscent of Mantamado. It is logically not as imposing as that one, it lacks the famous icon, but it is beautiful there too

It's a really nice church, well-maintained and it's open to visitors. It has a square outside of the church and a tap if you need water. It also has a cafeteria if you'd like to sit and have something to drink /eat.

When you are in Mytilene, 6 km from the city, the Temple of Taxiarches is located on a hill in Kagiani. In a place with an incredible view that you can see all the way to the port of Mytilene. The temple with a great history, dominates and looks over the whole of Mytilene. Inside the temple there are also the footprints of Taxiarches that you can see. Right outside the temple there is a cafe where you can sit and enjoy your coffee, seeing the beautiful view of the city and the sea. It is worth a visit to Taxiarches both as a pilgrimage and as a walk.💯

We visited this church courtyard on the way home from a restaurant. There had been a christening earlier and so there were lots of people still around. There's a really good view of the Aegean from here....it's almost worth thinking about attending an actual service!
