Possibly the best loukoumades on the island. Good price, fast service and very fresh loukoukades. Classic (nut/cinnamon), plain w/ice-cream, or chocolate… they are all very good.

Mandamados è conosciuta soprattutto come meta di pellegrinaggio, sede del venerato Monastero dei Taxiarchi con la sua straordinaria icona dell'Arcangelo Michele, e i visitatori che si recano in questo villaggio del nord di Lesbo sono invariabilmente pronti a riposarsi e ristorarsi prima o dopo la passeggiata attraverso i terreni del monastero. Questo locale risponde perfettamente a questa esigenza, offrendo bevande fredde, caffè greco tradizionale e la star del menu: i loukoumades.
I loukoumades sono uno dei dolci più antichi e amati della Grecia: piccole palline dorate di pasta fritta, croccanti fuori e soffici dentro, servite calde e generosamente irrorate di miele, spesso spolverate con cannella o semi di sesamo. Le loro radici risalgono alle antiche feste greche, e rimangono un appuntamento fisso della vita di villaggio e delle celebrazioni locali in tutto il paese. Trovarli preparati al momento in un caffè lungo la strada è uno di quei piaceri semplici che definiscono il viaggio attraverso la campagna greca. Qui arrivano in una porzione che sembra davvero generosa, abbinandosi perfettamente a un caffè greco o a un frappé freddo.
Per i visitatori che esplorano Mandamados, questo caffè offre qualcosa di più del semplice sostentamento: è l'occasione per sedersi a un tavolino, osservare la vita del villaggio che scorre e assorbire il ritmo tranquillo che rende Lesbo così caratteristica. Qualche tavolino in una piazzetta silenziosa, un piatto di loukoumades caldi grondanti di miele e cannella — questo café di Mandamados è la sosta ideale prima o dopo la visita al monastero di Taxiarchis. Si ordina un caffè greco o un frappé ghiacciato, arriva il dolce ancora fumante, e ci si ritrova a guardare scorrere la vita del villaggio senza alcuna fretta. È esattamente il ritmo che Lesbo sa offrire.
Periodo migliore
Da fine aprile a inizio ottobre; maggio, giugno e settembre sono i mesi più gradevoli per stare seduti all'aperto con una temperatura clemente.
Come arrivare
Mandamados si trova a circa 30 km a nord di Mitilene, con un percorso in auto di 40–45 minuti attraverso l'entroterra dell'isola. Il café è nel centro del paese, vicino alla strada che conduce al monastero.

The last stop for pilgrims visiting the churches on the island is a small cafe next to the Taxiarchis Monastery. They have fast service and offer Lokma (a type of fried dough) and various yogurts. You choose your yogurt according to your preference, and before paying at the counter, you can have honey and walnuts sprinkled on it. It's a tradition started by pilgrims visiting the church, and over time it has become a regional specialty; it was delicious. It tastes even better with the yogurt labeled "Greek yogurt." They have 5-6 types of yogurt, and one was the classic sheep's yogurt, which has a slightly sour taste; some might not like it with honey. Prices average around €3-4. We paid €23.50 for 5 yogurts and 2 plates of Lokma. It's a good establishment in terms of price-performance ratio.

We visited the Monastery of St. Michael, which is also the protector of the entire island of Lesbos, a wonderful place, with a special story and a miracle-working icon of St. Michael, which a monk made from clay and the blood of the martyrs who fell in the fight to defend the monastery. Next to this magnificent monastery there is also a Greek restaurant where we could have some chocolate donuts and a hot tea. Next to it there is also a small church shop where you can buy various souvenirs. Very beautiful, I highly recommend it!
