Refreshments - Coffee - Loukoumades
Visitors say
It was a place we enjoyed incredibly ❤️ Right next to the church, under the huge trees, there's a cafe that could be called a wonderful tea garden. Self-service. Prices are very reasonable. The chocolate sauce bite dessert was a hit!
Possibly the best loukoumades on the island. Good price, fast service and very fresh loukoukades. Classic (nut/cinnamon), plain w/ice-cream, or chocolate… they are all very good.
About
Tucked in the village of Mandamados, this welcoming café is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay a while. Mandamados itself is best known as a pilgrimage destination, home to the revered Taxiarchis Monastery with its extraordinary icon of Archangel Michael, and visitors who make the journey to this northern Lesvos village are invariably ready to rest and refresh themselves before or after the walk through the monastery grounds. This spot answers that need perfectly, offering cold drinks, traditional Greek coffee, and the star of the menu: loukoumades.
Loukoumades are one of Greece's oldest and most beloved treats — small, golden puffs of fried dough, crisp on the outside and pillowy within, served warm and generously drizzled with honey, often dusted with cinnamon or sesame seeds. Tracing their roots to ancient Greek festivals, they remain a fixture of village life and local celebrations across the country, and finding them made fresh at a roadside café is one of those simple pleasures that defines travel through the Greek countryside. Here they arrive in a portion that feels genuinely generous, pairing naturally with a Greek coffee or a cold frappé.
For visitors exploring Mandamados, this café offers something beyond just sustenance — it's a chance to sit at a table, watch village life pass by, and absorb the unhurried pace that makes Lesvos so distinctive. Whether you stop in on the way to the monastery or linger after your visit, it's a small but satisfying reminder that on this island, the best experiences are often the most straightforward ones.
Before you go
What to expect
A few tables in a quiet village square, a plate of warm loukoumades arriving drenched in honey — this is the kind of stop where you sit down for ten minutes and find yourself still there half an hour later. The café draws naturally from the flow of visitors to the Taxiarchis Monastery nearby, offering a sweet and unhurried counterpoint to the walk through the monastery grounds. Order a Greek coffee or a cold frappé alongside the loukoumades and let the village pace do the rest.
Best time to visit
Late spring through early autumn; May, June, and September are particularly pleasant, with the heat gentle enough to enjoy sitting outside.
How to get there
Mandamados is about 30 km north of Mytilene, a drive of roughly 40 to 45 minutes through the island's interior. The café is in the village centre, close to the route up to the monastery.

The last stop for pilgrims visiting the churches on the island is a small cafe next to the Taxiarchis Monastery. They have fast service and offer Lokma (a type of fried dough) and various yogurts. You choose your yogurt according to your preference, and before paying at the counter, you can have honey and walnuts sprinkled on it. It's a tradition started by pilgrims visiting the church, and over time it has become a regional specialty; it was delicious. It tastes even better with the yogurt labeled "Greek yogurt." They have 5-6 types of yogurt, and one was the classic sheep's yogurt, which has a slightly sour taste; some might not like it with honey. Prices average around €3-4. We paid €23.50 for 5 yogurts and 2 plates of Lokma. It's a good establishment in terms of price-performance ratio.

We visited the Monastery of St. Michael, which is also the protector of the entire island of Lesbos, a wonderful place, with a special story and a miracle-working icon of St. Michael, which a monk made from clay and the blood of the martyrs who fell in the fight to defend the monastery. Next to this magnificent monastery there is also a Greek restaurant where we could have some chocolate donuts and a hot tea. Next to it there is also a small church shop where you can buy various souvenirs. Very beautiful, I highly recommend it!
