Possibly the best loukoumades on the island. Good price, fast service and very fresh loukoukades. Classic (nut/cinnamon), plain w/ice-cream, or chocolate… they are all very good.

Verscholen in het dorp Mandamados is dit gastvrije café het soort plek dat u uitnodigt om te vertragen en even te blijven hangen. Mandamados zelf staat vooral bekend als bedevaartsoord, de thuisbasis van het vereerde Taxiarchis-klooster met zijn buitengewone icoon van de aartsengel Michaël, en bezoekers die de reis naar dit noordelijke Lesbos-dorp maken, zijn steevast toe aan rust en verfrissing voordat of nadat ze over het kloosterterrein hebben gewandeld. Deze plek voorziet perfect in die behoefte, met koude drankjes, traditionele Griekse koffie en de ster van het menu: loukoumades.
Loukoumades zijn een van de oudste en meest geliefde lekkernijen van Griekenland: kleine, goudbruine gefrituurde deegballetjes, knapperig vanbuiten en zacht vanbinnen, warm geserveerd en royaal overgoten met honing, vaak bestrooid met kaneel of sesamzaadjes. Ze vinden hun oorsprong in oude Griekse festivals en zijn nog steeds een vast onderdeel van het dorpsleven en lokale vieringen door het hele land. Verse loukoumades vinden bij een café langs de weg is een van die eenvoudige genoegens die reizen door het Griekse platteland kenmerkt. Hier komen ze in een portie die echt royaal aanvoelt, en die vanzelf samengaat met een Griekse koffie of een koude frappé.
Voor bezoekers die Mandamados verkennen, biedt dit café meer dan alleen levensonderhoud: het is een kans om aan een tafeltje te zitten, het dorpsleven aan u voorbij te zien trekken en het ongehaaste tempo in u op te nemen dat Lesbos zo typerend maakt. Of u nu even stopt op weg naar het klooster of nog wat blijft na uw bezoek, het is een kleine maar bevredigende herinnering dat op dit eiland de beste ervaringen vaak de meest rechttoe rechtaan zijn.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Een paar tafeltjes op een rustig dorpsplein, een bord warme loukoumades rijk besprenkeld met honing — dit café in Mandamados is de vanzelfsprekende pauze voor wie het Taxiarchis-klooster bezoekt. U kunt er terecht voor een Griekse koffie, een koude frappé of gewoon een moment om het dorpsleven op zijn beloop te laten. De porties zijn royaal en de sfeer nodigt uit om te blijven.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Van eind april tot begin oktober; mei, juni en september zijn het aangenaamst om buiten te zitten, zonder de hitte van de zomermaanden.
Hoe er te komen
Mandamados ligt zo'n 30 km ten noorden van Mytilini, een rit van ongeveer 40 tot 45 minuten door het binnenland van Lesbos. Het café bevindt zich in het dorpscentrum, vlakbij de weg naar het klooster.

The last stop for pilgrims visiting the churches on the island is a small cafe next to the Taxiarchis Monastery. They have fast service and offer Lokma (a type of fried dough) and various yogurts. You choose your yogurt according to your preference, and before paying at the counter, you can have honey and walnuts sprinkled on it. It's a tradition started by pilgrims visiting the church, and over time it has become a regional specialty; it was delicious. It tastes even better with the yogurt labeled "Greek yogurt." They have 5-6 types of yogurt, and one was the classic sheep's yogurt, which has a slightly sour taste; some might not like it with honey. Prices average around €3-4. We paid €23.50 for 5 yogurts and 2 plates of Lokma. It's a good establishment in terms of price-performance ratio.

We visited the Monastery of St. Michael, which is also the protector of the entire island of Lesbos, a wonderful place, with a special story and a miracle-working icon of St. Michael, which a monk made from clay and the blood of the martyrs who fell in the fight to defend the monastery. Next to this magnificent monastery there is also a Greek restaurant where we could have some chocolate donuts and a hot tea. Next to it there is also a small church shop where you can buy various souvenirs. Very beautiful, I highly recommend it!
