Riposto nel tranquillo borgo di Vareia, appena a sud di Mitilene, il Museo-Biblioteca Stratis Eleftheriadis-Tériade è uno dei tesori culturali più inaspettati della Grecia. Stratis Eleftheriadis nacque a Lesbo e divenne Tériade, una delle figure più influenti dell'editoria d'arte europea del Novecento. Stabilitosi a Parigi, fondò la celebre rivista d'arte Verve e strinse profonde amicizie con i giganti del modernismo, commissionando opere originali a Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Léger, Miró e molti altri. Il museo che istituì nel suo paese natale riporta quel mondo sull'isola, ospitando una straordinaria collezione di litografie, libri d'artista e opere originali che sembra quasi impossibile incontrare in un ambiente così sereno e senza fretta.
I visitatori che entrano si trovano faccia a faccia con opere che hanno plasmato la cultura visiva del secolo scorso — edizioni rare di Verve, Jazz di Matisse, libri illustrati che sfumano il confine tra arte e pubblicazione. L'edificio stesso è di un'eleganza discreta, progettato per lasciare respirare l'arte, e la sezione della biblioteca conserva lo spirito intellettuale di un uomo che credeva profondamente nel legame tra letteratura, immagine e luogo. Tériade ebbe anche un ruolo fondamentale nel far riconoscere il pittore autodidatta lesbiota Theophilos, il cui museo si trova a pochi passi a Vareia, rendendo questo angolo dell'isola un notevole doppio pellegrinaggio per chiunque ami l'arte.
Il Museo Tériade premia le visite lente e attente. È il tipo di luogo in cui una singola litografia di Chagall o una pagina di un'edizione illustrata da Picasso possono fermarti sui tuoi passi e farti riconsiderare ciò che una piccola isola ai margini dell'Egeo ha silenziosamente donato al mondo. Per i viaggiatori che hanno a cuore l'arte e la cultura, è uno dei motivi più convincenti per soffermarsi a Lesbo oltre le spiagge.

Cosa aspettarsi
Nel tranquillo villaggio di Vareia, a pochi chilometri da Mitilene, questo museo custodisce litografie di Chagall e Picasso, rare edizioni della rivista Verve e il Jazz di Matisse — una collezione che ci si aspetterebbe di trovare in una grande capitale, qui esposta in un'atmosfera di totale serenità. Il ritmo della visita è lento e meditativo; spesso si ha le sale quasi per sé. Il Museo Theophilos, raggiungibile a piedi in cinque minuti, completa alla perfezione una mezza giornata dedicata all'arte.
Periodo migliore
La primavera e l'autunno sono i periodi più piacevoli; in estate il museo offre un gradito rifugio fresco nelle ore più calde della giornata.
Come arrivare
Vareia si trova a circa 4 km a sud di Mitilene — un breve tragitto in taxi o in auto lungo la strada costiera.

This is a very nice museum located really close to Mytilene within a small olive tree garden. It showcases the collaboration of Tériade with world renowned modern artists such as Picasso, Miro, Matisse… The exhibition is really well organized (and inexpensive!), and it’s really easy to follow given the way the paintings are presented and organized. The size of the museum is fairly small and doesn’t required a lot of time, however if you love art you can easily spend two hours going through the publications, the paintings, and their stories. Highly recommended!

Do not miss this museum if you are in Lesvos. It ia a hidden gem outside the capital near the airport. You can't imagine what Stratis managed to do to have this collection that the Louvre or El Prado Museum would fight for. Visits are from 8:30-15:30, so take that into account when planning it. It takes around 1 hour max to see everything. It has parking. Do not really trust google maps because is not helpful to arrive, will take you to end roads.

We visited this museum on our last day in Lesvos and found it to be a place of remarkable determination and devotion. Learning about Teriade, his life, and his works was truly enriching. The museum is nestled in a garden surrounded by old olive trees, creating a captivating atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The lady at the reception was friendly and provided us with helpful information about what to expect inside. It was also a pleasure to see some of Theophilos' artwork displayed in one of the galleries on the first floor. However, there's one area where the museum could improve. While all the explanations were in French and Greek (likely due to the significant French influence on Teriade), it would have been beneficial to have English translations as well. We had to rely on Google Lens and Translate, which was time-consuming and somewhat distracting.

An unexpected gem. Tériade was an art critic and publisher of art magazines and books. The museum showcases original works that appeared in his publications from artists that include Chagall, Picasso, Miró, and Matisse.Exhibits are well organized and spread across two floors of a rather compact building. Be aware that exhibit information is in Greek and French, no English.

This was a surprising find. A very well-curated display about a Greek artist who went to Paris and became a leading light in the art scene there at a very important time. It focuses on a hardbound periodical (called Verve) that they published for many years. This magazine managed to spread their significant art ideas around the world, influencing artists everywhere. A very worthwhile experience.

I wouldn’t call it a museum but rather a permanent exhibition of the private art collection of Stratis Eleftheriades. Totally worth the €3 entrance fee.

A nice surprise. The collection of the museum has a collection of reproductions of art from famous expresionists surrealist etc artist from 20th century from the art magazine Teriaded published and on the second floor some prototype paintings mostly from the painters charouchis and Theophilos. The gallery-museum was big and really great an definitely worth a visit. The collection was very nicely presented. 3€
