Nichée dans le paisible village de Vareia, juste au sud de Mytilène, le Musée-Bibliothèque Stratis Eleftheriadis-Tériade est l'un des trésors culturels les plus inattendus de Grèce. Stratis Eleftheriadis est né à Lesbos et est devenu Tériade, l'une des figures les plus influentes de l'édition d'art européenne du XXe siècle. Installé à Paris, il a fondé la célèbre revue d'art Verve et noué de profondes amitiés avec les géants du modernisme, commandant des œuvres originales à Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Léger, Miró et bien d'autres. Le musée qu'il a créé dans son village natal ramène ce monde sur l'île, abritant une collection extraordinaire de lithographies, de livres d'artiste et d'œuvres originales qu'il semble presque impossible de rencontrer dans un cadre aussi serein et paisible.
En pénétrant à l'intérieur, les visiteurs se retrouvent face à face avec des œuvres qui ont façonné la culture visuelle du siècle dernier — des éditions rares de Verve, le Jazz de Matisse, des livres illustrés qui brouillent la frontière entre l'art et l'édition. Le bâtiment lui-même est d'une élégance discrète, conçu pour laisser respirer l'art, et la section de la bibliothèque préserve l'esprit intellectuel d'un homme qui croyait profondément au lien entre la littérature, l'image et le lieu. Tériade a également joué un rôle décisif dans la reconnaissance du peintre autodidacte lesbien Theophilos, dont le propre musée se trouve à quelques pas de là, à Vareia, faisant de ce coin de l'île un remarquable double pèlerinage pour tous les amateurs d'art.
Le Musée Tériade récompense les visites lentes et attentives. C'est le genre d'endroit où une seule lithographie de Chagall ou une page d'une édition illustrée par Picasso peut vous arrêter net et vous faire reconsidérer ce qu'une petite île aux confins de la mer Égée a discrètement offert au monde. Pour les voyageurs qui s'intéressent à l'art et à la culture, c'est l'une des raisons les plus convaincantes de s'attarder à Lesbos au-delà des plages.

À quoi s'attendre
Dans le calme village de Vareia, à quelques kilomètres de Mytilène, ce musée abrite des lithographies de Chagall et Picasso, de rares numéros de la revue Verve et le Jazz de Matisse — une collection que l'on s'attendrait à trouver dans une grande capitale, ici exposée dans une sérénité totale. La visite invite à la lenteur et à la contemplation ; vous aurez souvent les salles pour vous seul. Le musée Théophilos, situé à cinq minutes à pied, complète idéalement la visite pour une matinée consacrée à l'art.
Quand y aller
Le printemps et l'automne offrent les conditions les plus agréables ; en été, le musée constitue un refuge bienvenu pour échapper à la chaleur du milieu de journée.
Comment s'y rendre
Vareia se trouve à environ 4 km au sud de Mytilène — un court trajet en taxi ou en voiture le long de la route côtière.

This is a very nice museum located really close to Mytilene within a small olive tree garden. It showcases the collaboration of Tériade with world renowned modern artists such as Picasso, Miro, Matisse… The exhibition is really well organized (and inexpensive!), and it’s really easy to follow given the way the paintings are presented and organized. The size of the museum is fairly small and doesn’t required a lot of time, however if you love art you can easily spend two hours going through the publications, the paintings, and their stories. Highly recommended!

Do not miss this museum if you are in Lesvos. It ia a hidden gem outside the capital near the airport. You can't imagine what Stratis managed to do to have this collection that the Louvre or El Prado Museum would fight for. Visits are from 8:30-15:30, so take that into account when planning it. It takes around 1 hour max to see everything. It has parking. Do not really trust google maps because is not helpful to arrive, will take you to end roads.

We visited this museum on our last day in Lesvos and found it to be a place of remarkable determination and devotion. Learning about Teriade, his life, and his works was truly enriching. The museum is nestled in a garden surrounded by old olive trees, creating a captivating atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The lady at the reception was friendly and provided us with helpful information about what to expect inside. It was also a pleasure to see some of Theophilos' artwork displayed in one of the galleries on the first floor. However, there's one area where the museum could improve. While all the explanations were in French and Greek (likely due to the significant French influence on Teriade), it would have been beneficial to have English translations as well. We had to rely on Google Lens and Translate, which was time-consuming and somewhat distracting.

An unexpected gem. Tériade was an art critic and publisher of art magazines and books. The museum showcases original works that appeared in his publications from artists that include Chagall, Picasso, Miró, and Matisse.Exhibits are well organized and spread across two floors of a rather compact building. Be aware that exhibit information is in Greek and French, no English.

This was a surprising find. A very well-curated display about a Greek artist who went to Paris and became a leading light in the art scene there at a very important time. It focuses on a hardbound periodical (called Verve) that they published for many years. This magazine managed to spread their significant art ideas around the world, influencing artists everywhere. A very worthwhile experience.

I wouldn’t call it a museum but rather a permanent exhibition of the private art collection of Stratis Eleftheriades. Totally worth the €3 entrance fee.

A nice surprise. The collection of the museum has a collection of reproductions of art from famous expresionists surrealist etc artist from 20th century from the art magazine Teriaded published and on the second floor some prototype paintings mostly from the painters charouchis and Theophilos. The gallery-museum was big and really great an definitely worth a visit. The collection was very nicely presented. 3€
