What a nice place ! Surprising and interesting museum near Mitileni. The history of Mr Tiriade, across modern art and so many wonderful artists. I strongly recommend you to stop there and enjoy a few hours
A real hidden gem, fantastic works of the best modernist artists — might the best museum visit in the last few years.
About
Tucked into the quiet village of Vareia just south of Mytilene, the Stratis Eleftheriadis-Tériade Museum-Library stands as one of Greece's most unexpected cultural treasures. Stratis Eleftheriadis was born on Lesvos and went on to become Tériade, one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century European art publishing. Settling in Paris, he founded the celebrated art journal Verve and forged deep friendships with the giants of modernism, commissioning original works from Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Léger, Miró, and many others. The museum he established in his birthplace brings that world back to the island, housing an extraordinary collection of lithographs, artist books, and original works that feel almost impossible to encounter in such a serene, unhurried setting.
Visitors stepping inside find themselves face to face with works that shaped the visual culture of the last century — rare editions of Verve, Matisse's Jazz, illustrated books that blur the line between fine art and publication. The building itself is quietly elegant, designed to let the art breathe, and the library section preserves the intellectual spirit of a man who believed deeply in the connection between literature, image, and place. Tériade also played a pivotal role in bringing recognition to the self-taught Lesbiot painter Theophilos, whose own museum sits just a short walk away in Vareia, making this corner of the island a remarkable double pilgrimage for anyone who loves art.
The Tériade Museum rewards slow, attentive visits. It is the kind of place where a single lithograph by Chagall or a page from a Picasso-illustrated edition can stop you in your tracks and make you reconsider what a small island on the edge of the Aegean has quietly given the world. For travelers who care about art and culture, it is among the most compelling reasons to linger in Lesvos beyond the beaches.
Before you go
What to expect
You walk into a small village museum and find yourself face to face with original lithographs by Chagall and Picasso, rare Verve journal editions, and Matisse's Jazz — the kind of collection that belongs in a major capital but sits here in complete calm. The pace is slow and contemplative; you're likely to have entire rooms to yourself. A five-minute walk leads to the Theophilos Museum, making the two an ideal pairing for an art-focused half-day.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions; summer visits work well as a cool midday refuge from the heat.
How to get there
Vareia is about 4 km south of Mytilene — a short taxi ride or a straightforward drive along the coastal road.

This is a very nice museum located really close to Mytilene within a small olive tree garden. It showcases the collaboration of Tériade with world renowned modern artists such as Picasso, Miro, Matisse… The exhibition is really well organized (and inexpensive!), and it’s really easy to follow given the way the paintings are presented and organized. The size of the museum is fairly small and doesn’t required a lot of time, however if you love art you can easily spend two hours going through the publications, the paintings, and their stories. Highly recommended!

Do not miss this museum if you are in Lesvos. It ia a hidden gem outside the capital near the airport. You can't imagine what Stratis managed to do to have this collection that the Louvre or El Prado Museum would fight for. Visits are from 8:30-15:30, so take that into account when planning it. It takes around 1 hour max to see everything. It has parking. Do not really trust google maps because is not helpful to arrive, will take you to end roads.

Such a pleasant surprise, interesting insights into the art collector’s life and some of the pioneers of modern art he used to work with (Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, etc.)

We visited this museum on our last day in Lesvos and found it to be a place of remarkable determination and devotion. Learning about Teriade, his life, and his works was truly enriching. The museum is nestled in a garden surrounded by old olive trees, creating a captivating atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The lady at the reception was friendly and provided us with helpful information about what to expect inside. It was also a pleasure to see some of Theophilos' artwork displayed in one of the galleries on the first floor. However, there's one area where the museum could improve. While all the explanations were in French and Greek (likely due to the significant French influence on Teriade), it would have been beneficial to have English translations as well. We had to rely on Google Lens and Translate, which was time-consuming and somewhat distracting.

An unexpected gem. Tériade was an art critic and publisher of art magazines and books. The museum showcases original works that appeared in his publications from artists that include Chagall, Picasso, Miró, and Matisse.Exhibits are well organized and spread across two floors of a rather compact building. Be aware that exhibit information is in Greek and French, no English.

This was a surprising find. A very well-curated display about a Greek artist who went to Paris and became a leading light in the art scene there at a very important time. It focuses on a hardbound periodical (called Verve) that they published for many years. This magazine managed to spread their significant art ideas around the world, influencing artists everywhere. A very worthwhile experience.

I wouldn’t call it a museum but rather a permanent exhibition of the private art collection of Stratis Eleftheriades. Totally worth the €3 entrance fee.
