Stratis Eleftheriadis-Tériade Müze-Kütüphanesi, Midilli şehrinin hemen güneyindeki sessiz Varya köyüne sığınmış olup Yunanistan'ın en beklenmedik kültürel hazinelerinden biri olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Stratis Eleftheriadis, Midilli'de doğmuş ve yirminci yüzyıl Avrupa sanat yayıncılığının en etkili simalarından biri olan Tériade adıyla tarihe geçmiştir. Paris'e yerleşerek ünlü sanat dergisi Verve'yi kuran Tériade, modernizmin büyük ustaları ile derin dostluklar kurmuş; Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Léger, Miró ve daha pek çok isimden özgün eserler sipariş etmiştir. Doğduğu yerde kurduğu müze, o dünyayı adaya geri taşır: litografiler, sanatçı kitapları ve özgün eserlerden oluşan bu olağanüstü koleksiyonla bu denli sakin ve acelesi olmayan bir ortamda karşılaşmak neredeyse inanılmaz gelir.
İçeri adım atan ziyaretçiler, geçen yüzyılın görsel kültürünü biçimlendiren eserlerle yüzleşir: Verve'nin nadir baskıları, Matisse'in Jazz'ı, güzel sanat ile yayıncılık arasındaki sınırı bulanıklaştıran resimli kitaplar. Binanın kendisi sessiz bir zarafet taşır; sanatın nefes almasına izin verecek şekilde tasarlanmıştır. Kütüphane bölümü ise edebiyat, imge ve mekân arasındaki bağa derinden inanan bir adamın entelektüel ruhunu yaşatır. Tériade, kendi kendini yetiştirmiş Midillili ressam Theophilos'un dünyaca tanınmasında da belirleyici bir rol oynamıştır; Theophilos'un müzesi Varya'da yalnızca kısa bir yürüyüş uzaklığında yer almakta olup adanın bu köşesini sanatseverlerin gözünde eşsiz bir çifte hac durağına dönüştürmektedir.
Tériade Müzesi, yavaş ve dikkatli ziyaretlerin hakkını verir. Bir Chagall litografisinin ya da Picasso çizimli bir baskının tek bir sayfasının sizi olduğunuz yere mıhlayabileceği ve Ege'nin kıyısındaki bu küçük adanın dünyaya sessiz sedasız neler armağan ettiğini yeniden düşündürebileceği türden bir yerdir. Sanat ve kültürü önemseyen gezginler için Midilli'de kumsalların ötesine geçip daha uzun süre kalmak adına en zorlayıcı nedenlerden birini oluşturur.

Ziyaret temposu yavaş ve düşündürücüdür; salonları çoğunlukla tek başınıza gezebilirsiniz. Beş dakika yürüme mesafesindeki Theophilos Müzesi ile birleştirilerek sanat odaklı güzel bir yarım gün geçirilebilir.

Nasıl gidilir
Vareia, Midilli'nin yaklaşık 4 km güneyindedir; kıyı yolu boyunca kısa bir taksi veya araba yolculuğuyla kolayca ulaşılır.

This is a very nice museum located really close to Mytilene within a small olive tree garden. It showcases the collaboration of Tériade with world renowned modern artists such as Picasso, Miro, Matisse… The exhibition is really well organized (and inexpensive!), and it’s really easy to follow given the way the paintings are presented and organized. The size of the museum is fairly small and doesn’t required a lot of time, however if you love art you can easily spend two hours going through the publications, the paintings, and their stories. Highly recommended!

Do not miss this museum if you are in Lesvos. It ia a hidden gem outside the capital near the airport. You can't imagine what Stratis managed to do to have this collection that the Louvre or El Prado Museum would fight for. Visits are from 8:30-15:30, so take that into account when planning it. It takes around 1 hour max to see everything. It has parking. Do not really trust google maps because is not helpful to arrive, will take you to end roads.

We visited this museum on our last day in Lesvos and found it to be a place of remarkable determination and devotion. Learning about Teriade, his life, and his works was truly enriching. The museum is nestled in a garden surrounded by old olive trees, creating a captivating atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The lady at the reception was friendly and provided us with helpful information about what to expect inside. It was also a pleasure to see some of Theophilos' artwork displayed in one of the galleries on the first floor. However, there's one area where the museum could improve. While all the explanations were in French and Greek (likely due to the significant French influence on Teriade), it would have been beneficial to have English translations as well. We had to rely on Google Lens and Translate, which was time-consuming and somewhat distracting.

An unexpected gem. Tériade was an art critic and publisher of art magazines and books. The museum showcases original works that appeared in his publications from artists that include Chagall, Picasso, Miró, and Matisse.Exhibits are well organized and spread across two floors of a rather compact building. Be aware that exhibit information is in Greek and French, no English.

This was a surprising find. A very well-curated display about a Greek artist who went to Paris and became a leading light in the art scene there at a very important time. It focuses on a hardbound periodical (called Verve) that they published for many years. This magazine managed to spread their significant art ideas around the world, influencing artists everywhere. A very worthwhile experience.

I wouldn’t call it a museum but rather a permanent exhibition of the private art collection of Stratis Eleftheriades. Totally worth the €3 entrance fee.

A nice surprise. The collection of the museum has a collection of reproductions of art from famous expresionists surrealist etc artist from 20th century from the art magazine Teriaded published and on the second floor some prototype paintings mostly from the painters charouchis and Theophilos. The gallery-museum was big and really great an definitely worth a visit. The collection was very nicely presented. 3€
