Kavos Cafe bevindt zich in een van de meest sfeervolle hoekjes van Lesbos, gelegen aan de rand van Skala Sykamineas, het kleine vissershaventje dat Stratis Myrivilis inspireerde tot zijn geliefde roman De Meerminmadonna. Het dorp is een van de meest ongerepte op het eiland, met kleurrijke houten kaiks die nog onder de moerbeibomen afgemeerd liggen, en Kavos – wat in het Grieks kaap of landtong betekent – neemt een bevoorrechte plek in waar de Egeïsche Zee zich uitstrekt richting de Turkse kust in het noorden. Het is het soort café dat geworteld voelt in zijn omgeving, een natuurlijke pauzeplek na de kronkelige weg omlaag vanaf het dorpje Sykaminia op de heuvel.
Bezoekers komen hier voor Griekse koffie, ijskoude frappés, verse sappen en eenvoudige versnaperingen geserveerd in een tempo dat past bij het onthaaste ritme van de haven. De omgeving doet het meeste werk: visnetten, zilte lucht, het zachte klotsen van boten tegen de kade, en uitzichten die met het daglicht veranderen. Of u nu 's ochtends in de koelte neerstrijkt voordat u de kust verkent, of tot in de late namiddag blijft hangen terwijl de zon boven het water zakt, Kavos biedt het ongecompliceerde plezier dat het beste van de Griekse cafécultuur typeert.
Voor reizigers die de noordelijke kustroute van Lesbos volgen, is Skala Sykamineas een onmisbare stop, en Kavos Cafe levert het perfecte excuus om vaart te minderen en het goed in u op te nemen. Het is zo'n plek waar een enkel kopje koffie een uur kan duren zonder dat het aanvoelt als tijdverspilling – omgeven door oprecht dorpsleven, authentieke decors en het stille drama van een van de meest roemruchte kustlijnen van de Egeïsche Zee.

Wat u kunt verwachten
U zit op slechts enkele meters van het water, terwijl kleurrijke houten caïques vlak voor u dobberen en op heldere dagen de Turkse kust zichtbaar is aan de overkant van de smalle zeestraat. Het tempo wordt hier bepaald door de haven zelf — ongehaast, stil, alleen onderbroken door meeuwen en het kraken van trossen. Bestel een Griekse koffie of een frappé en laat de ochtend of middag zich rustig om u heen ontvouwen.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Eind april tot begin september is ideaal; de noordelijke ligging zorgt voor een aangenaam briesje, ook tijdens de warmste dagen van juli en augustus.
Hoe er te komen
Rijd vanuit Mytilene naar het noorden richting Kalloni en vervolg via de noordkustweg — reken op ongeveer een uur tot anderhalf uur rijden. Volg de borden omlaag vanuit het hoog gelegen dorp Sykaminia; de laatste afdaling is steil en smal, maar voert u rechtstreeks naar de haven.

The place is great to relax and drink your coffee, especially in the back yard. The parrot that the owners have is a great attraction to the kids. You can eat snacks, ice cream and also a beer in the evening. The owners are very friendly. Update - as of summer 2022 the parrot is deceased. It was a landmark for tens of years... Hope that it will be replaced soon.

Very nice place with a good atmosphere next to the sea. Food and drink options are very good as well. Service is always friendly, fast and open for a joke. Plenty of free street parking on the left hand side of the harbour. I can only recommend this place. Make sure to check out the inside space as well as the space behind the store itself.

A very nice little cafe situated in one of the corners of the very picturesque port called Skala Sykaminea. We went there three times during our stay in Sykaminea. You can sit at the front of the cafe with a really nice view of the little port with the boats the taverns and the church. We opted to sit in the back garden where you can find nice shade in the hot summer days. The place is offering very nice coffees, cold espresso and cappuccino. We also tried the tosts, the savoury crêpes and the omelettes. There isn't a great variety bit all the ingredients are very fresh and the taste is excellent! Finally we tried the ice cream which was fabulous. There are board games for the whole family. Lots of kids playing around. A very family friendly place.

A real traditional Greek fishing village with a small port and a few restaurants. A must to visit when you are in Lesvos. Real friendly people here and make sure to have a look in the back. They have a beautiful parrot sitting there. While entering this village, be aware of the town fool. It’s an older man dressed up in a wedding dress !!

A great location with an amazing view. The cafe really does provide a one of a kind scene and the coffee and food is obviously high standard greek food. This is a very good spot for familys or large groups looking for a secret and quite spot to relax at. Fun fact is that if you look just over the sea you can see the neughbouring country turkey.
