Η Αρχαία Ίσσα, τα κατάλοιπα ενός αρχαίου οικισμού που βρίσκεται στο ήρεμο τοπίο κοντά στο χωριό Παράκοιλα, προσφέρει ένα παράθυρο στο πολυεπίπεδο προϊστορικό και κλασικό παρελθόν της Λέσβου. Αν και λιγότερο γνωστή από τις πέντε μεγάλες αρχαίες πόλεις-κράτη του νησιού — τη Μυτιλήνη, τη Μήθυμνα, την Άντισσα, την Ερεσό και την Πύρρα — η Ίσσα αποτελεί απόδειξη του πόσο πυκνοκατοικημένο ήταν αυτό το εύφορο νησί στην αρχαιότητα. Ο χώρος χρονολογείται σε περιόδους που εκτείνονται από την Εποχή του Χαλκού έως την κλασική εποχή, όταν οι λόφοι και οι παράκτιες πεδιάδες της Λέσβου υποστήριζαν πολυάριθμες κοινότητες ασχολούμενες με τη γεωργία, το εμπόριο και τη ζωντανή πολιτιστική ζωή για την οποία το νησί έγινε ξακουστό σε ολόκληρο τον αρχαίο ελληνικό κόσμο.
Οι επισκέπτες που κάνουν τη σύντομη διαδρομή από τα Παράκοιλα αντικρίζουν την ήσυχη αξιοπρέπεια ενός αρχαιολογικού τοπίου, όπου τα θεμέλια, οι διάσπαρτοι λίθοι και τα χωμάτινα ανάγλυφα μιλούν για έναν οικισμό που κάποτε είχε πραγματική σημασία για τους κατοίκους του. Το περιβάλλον έδαφος — κυματιστοί λόφοι που αγναντεύουν τον Κόλπο της Καλλονής — δίνει μια ιδέα για το γιατί επιλέχθηκε αυτή η τοποθεσία: γόνιμη γη, εποπτεία του ορίζοντα και εγγύτητα στις υδάτινες οδούς που αποτελούσαν τις αρτηρίες του αρχαίου εμπορίου. Όστρακα και αρχιτεκτονικά ίχνη που έχουν βρεθεί στην περιοχή υποδηλώνουν αδιάκοπη κατοίκηση και τους ρυθμούς της καθημερινής αρχαίας ζωής, παρά τη μνημειακή μεγαλοπρέπεια μιας μεγάλης πόλης.
Η Αρχαία Ίσσα ανταμείβει τον περίεργο ταξιδιώτη που είναι διατεθειμένος να εκτιμήσει τη λεπτότητα. Δεν υπάρχουν εδώ υψηλοί κίονες ούτε επιβλητικοί ναοί, αλλά ο χώρος αποπνέει μια ατμόσφαιρα γνήσιας αρχαιότητας, μακριά από τουριστικά πλήθη, σε ένα τοπίο που σχεδόν δεν έχει αλλάξει στον ουσιώδη χαρακτήρα του εδώ και χιλιετίες. Συνδυασμένη με μια επίσκεψη στο κοντινό χωριό των Παράκοιλων και στα ευρύτερα αξιοθέατα της λεκάνης της Καλλονής, αποτελεί μια ήσυχα αξέχαστη συνάντηση με τη βαθιά ανθρώπινη ιστορία της Λέσβου.

Τι να περιμένετε
Ανάμεσα στα σκορπισμένα θεμέλια και τα λίθινα κατάλοιπα στην πλαγιά πάνω από τον Κόλπο της Καλλονής, νιώθετε τον παλμό μιας καθημερινής αρχαίας ζωής — αγρότες, έμποροι, κοινότητα που άνθιζε από τη Χαλκολιθική έως την κλασική εποχή. Το τοπίο έχει αλλάξει ελάχιστα και η θέα στον κόλπο εξηγεί αμέσως γιατί αυτή η θέση επιλέχθηκε για κατοίκηση. Φέρτε νερό και διάθεση να «διαβάσετε» ένα τοπίο, όχι να θαυμάσετε κολοσσιαίες κολόνες.
Καλύτερη εποχή
Η άνοιξη (Απρίλιος–Μάιος) και το πρώιμο φθινόπωρο (Σεπτέμβριος–Οκτώβριος) προσφέρουν ευχάριστες θερμοκρασίες και πρακτικά μηδενική επισκεψιμότητα.
Πώς θα φτάσετε
Από τη Μυτιλήνη, ακολουθήστε τον δρόμο προς Καλλονή — περίπου μία ώρα οδήγηση — και από εκεί η Παρακοιλά βρίσκεται λίγα χιλιόμετρα πιο πέρα· ο αρχαιολογικός χώρος εκτείνεται στο ανοιχτό τοπίο έξω από το χωριό.

I have stayed at the ISSA Lesvos Hostel two times. Three nights in September 2025 and a month now in February 2026. There was not once a moment where I did not feel comfortable, welcomed or unpleasant. Not only was everything always very clean, modern and efficient - the receptionists (Tanya, Katharina and Elena) are so lovely and attentive! They all do such a great job and really care about the experience and comfortableness of their guests. With all three you can have such a great chat but after a conversation with Tanya your heart is full with laughter and light. Thank you guys for such a great time!:)

My family loved our stay at Issa Lesvos - Elena and the staff assisting with reception and room maintenance were so lovely and caring. Our trip to the beautiful and restful Mytilene was greatly complemented by the convenient location, amenities and general homely atmosphere of the building and rooms. The premises is located in the most beautiful laneways of Mytilini. The room we stayed in aesthetically pleasing. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be returning in the near future.

Issa Lesvos was hands down one of the best hostels I have had the pleasure of experiencing during my two-years-plus travels. Spacious lounge (with free coffee and tea) and lockers that were accessible before check-in and after check-out; great and spacious room with big lockers (very nice) and good beds; nice breakfast at MK's; and very kind, helpful, and interested staff. If there is any small minus to find, it would be that the downstairs/outside music can be heard rather loud in the room I was staying in (but nothing that earplugs can't keep out). All in all a wonderful experience and highly recommended hostel 🙏😊

I had an excellent time at ISSA in early November! The rooms and common areas were very nice and well organized and equipped and the staff were really friendly and helpful with everything I needed. It can be noisy during the night on weekends and holidays so earplugs come handy:) totally recommended!!

Probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was great. Room was big and clean and new. The breakfast was a voucher for a local cafe which was also 10/10. Can’t recommend enough.
