Archaia Issa, de overblijfselen van een oude nederzetting genesteld in het stille landschap nabij het dorp Parakoila, biedt een blik op het gelaagde prehistorische en klassieke verleden van Lesbos. Hoewel minder bekend dan de vijf grote antieke stadstaten van het eiland — Mytilene, Methymna, Antissa, Eresos en Pyrrha — staat Issa als bewijs voor hoe dichtbevolkt dit vruchtbare eiland in de oudheid was. De site dateert uit periodes die reiken van de Bronstijd tot de klassieke periode, toen de heuvels en kustvlakten van Lesbos talrijke gemeenschappen ondersteunden die zich bezighielden met landbouw, handel en het rijke culturele leven waarvoor het eiland in de hele oud-Griekse wereld beroemd werd. Bezoekers die de korte reis vanuit Parakoila maken, ervaren de stille waardigheid van een archeologisch landschap waar fundamenten, verspreid steenwerk en grondwerken spreken van een nederzetting die ooit grote betekenis had voor haar bewoners. Het omringende terrein — glooiende heuvels met uitzicht op de Golf van Kalloni — geeft een gevoel van waarom deze locatie werd gekozen: goede grond, een indrukwekkend uitzicht en de nabijheid van de waterwegen die de slagaders van de antieke handel waren. Aardewerkscherven en architecturale sporen die in het gebied zijn gevonden, duiden op langdurige bewoning en de ritmes van het gewone antieke leven, eerder dan op de monumentale pracht van een grote stad. Archaia Issa beloont de nieuwsgierige reiziger die bereid is subtiliteit te omarmen. Er zijn hier geen torenhoge zuilen of grootse tempels, maar de site bezit een sfeer van authentieke oudheid, weg van toeristische drukte, in een landschap dat in essentie nauwelijks is veranderd gedurende millennia. Gecombineerd met een bezoek aan het nabijgelegen dorp Parakoila en de bredere rijkdommen van het Kalloni-bekken, zorgt het voor een ingetogen, gedenkwaardige ontmoeting met de diepe menselijke geschiedenis van Lesbos.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Tussen de verspreid liggende fundamenten en steenresten op de heuvel boven de Golf van Kalloni voelt u de aanwezigheid van een alledaags antiek leven — geen grootse tempels, maar stille sporen van mensen die hier van de Bronstijd tot de klassieke periode landbouw bedreven en handel dreven. Het omliggende landschap is nauwelijks veranderd, en het uitzicht over de golf maakt meteen duidelijk waarom deze plek destijds werd bewoond. Een bezoek vergt geduld en nieuwsgierigheid, maar de sfeer van echte ouderdom is onmiskenbaar.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Het voorjaar (april tot mei) en de vroege herfst (september tot oktober) zijn het aangenaamst — aanvaardbare temperaturen en vrijwel geen andere bezoekers.
Hoe er te komen
Vanuit Mytilini rijdt u westwaarts richting Kalloni, een rit van ongeveer een uur; van daaruit is het nog een korte rit naar het dorp Parakoila, vlak buiten welk de vindplaats in het open landschap ligt.

I have stayed at the ISSA Lesvos Hostel two times. Three nights in September 2025 and a month now in February 2026. There was not once a moment where I did not feel comfortable, welcomed or unpleasant. Not only was everything always very clean, modern and efficient - the receptionists (Tanya, Katharina and Elena) are so lovely and attentive! They all do such a great job and really care about the experience and comfortableness of their guests. With all three you can have such a great chat but after a conversation with Tanya your heart is full with laughter and light. Thank you guys for such a great time!:)

My family loved our stay at Issa Lesvos - Elena and the staff assisting with reception and room maintenance were so lovely and caring. Our trip to the beautiful and restful Mytilene was greatly complemented by the convenient location, amenities and general homely atmosphere of the building and rooms. The premises is located in the most beautiful laneways of Mytilini. The room we stayed in aesthetically pleasing. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be returning in the near future.

Issa Lesvos was hands down one of the best hostels I have had the pleasure of experiencing during my two-years-plus travels. Spacious lounge (with free coffee and tea) and lockers that were accessible before check-in and after check-out; great and spacious room with big lockers (very nice) and good beds; nice breakfast at MK's; and very kind, helpful, and interested staff. If there is any small minus to find, it would be that the downstairs/outside music can be heard rather loud in the room I was staying in (but nothing that earplugs can't keep out). All in all a wonderful experience and highly recommended hostel 🙏😊

I had an excellent time at ISSA in early November! The rooms and common areas were very nice and well organized and equipped and the staff were really friendly and helpful with everything I needed. It can be noisy during the night on weekends and holidays so earplugs come handy:) totally recommended!!

Probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was great. Room was big and clean and new. The breakfast was a voucher for a local cafe which was also 10/10. Can’t recommend enough.
