Archaia Issa, les vestiges d'un ancien établissement blotti dans le paisible paysage près du village de Parakoila, offre une fenêtre sur le passé préhistorique et classique stratifié de Lesbos. Bien que moins célèbre que les cinq grandes cités-États antiques de l'île — Mytilène, Méthymne, Antissa, Érèse et Pyrrha — Issa témoigne de la densité de l'occupation humaine sur cette île fertile durant l'Antiquité. Le site s'étend sur des périodes allant de l'âge du Bronze à l'époque classique, lorsque les collines et les plaines côtières de Lesbos abritaient de nombreuses communautés vivant d'agriculture, de commerce et d'une riche vie culturelle qui a rendu l'île célèbre dans tout le monde grec antique. Les visiteurs qui font le court trajet depuis Parakoila découvrent la dignité tranquille d'un paysage archéologique où des fondations, des pierres éparpillées et des terrassements évoquent une colonie qui eut une réelle importance pour ses habitants. Le terrain environnant — des collines ondulantes dominant le golfe de Kalloni — donne une idée des raisons du choix de ce lieu : de bonnes terres, une vue imprenable et la proximité des voies navigables, artères du commerce antique. Les tessons de poterie et les traces architecturales découverts dans la région suggèrent une occupation durable et les rythmes de la vie quotidienne antique, plutôt que la grandeur monumentale d'une grande cité. Archaia Issa récompense le voyageur curieux prêt à s'engager dans la subtilité. Il n'y a ici ni colonnes imposantes ni temples grandioses, mais le site possède une atmosphère d'antiquité authentique, loin des foules touristiques, dans un paysage dont le caractère essentiel a peu changé au fil des millénaires. Combinée à une visite du village voisin de Parakoila et aux richesses du bassin de Kalloni, cette excursion offre une rencontre tranquillement mémorable avec la profonde histoire humaine de Lesbos.

À quoi s'attendre
En déambulant parmi les fondations éparses et les vestiges de pierre sur les collines qui surplombent le golfe de Kalloni, vous percevez la présence d'une vie antique ordinaire — non pas de grands monuments, mais les traces d'une communauté qui cultiva ces terres et commercia pendant des millénaires, de l'âge du Bronze à l'époque classique. Le paysage environnant a peu changé dans son caractère essentiel, ce qui rend le lieu d'autant plus évocateur. Venez avec de l'eau et la curiosité de lire un paysage plutôt que d'admirer des colonnes.
Quand y aller
Le printemps (avril à mai) et le début de l'automne (septembre à octobre) offrent des températures agréables et une solitude presque garantie sur le site.
Comment s'y rendre
Depuis Mytilène, empruntez la route vers Kalloni — environ une heure de trajet — puis continuez quelques kilomètres jusqu'au village de Parakoila, aux abords duquel s'étend le site.

I have stayed at the ISSA Lesvos Hostel two times. Three nights in September 2025 and a month now in February 2026. There was not once a moment where I did not feel comfortable, welcomed or unpleasant. Not only was everything always very clean, modern and efficient - the receptionists (Tanya, Katharina and Elena) are so lovely and attentive! They all do such a great job and really care about the experience and comfortableness of their guests. With all three you can have such a great chat but after a conversation with Tanya your heart is full with laughter and light. Thank you guys for such a great time!:)

My family loved our stay at Issa Lesvos - Elena and the staff assisting with reception and room maintenance were so lovely and caring. Our trip to the beautiful and restful Mytilene was greatly complemented by the convenient location, amenities and general homely atmosphere of the building and rooms. We are incredibly keen to return and couldn’t have asked for a better experience during our first trip to Greece!

The premises is located in the most beautiful laneways of Mytilini. The room we stayed in aesthetically pleasing. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be returning in the near future.

Issa Lesvos was hands down one of the best hostels I have had the pleasure of experiencing during my two-years-plus travels. Spacious lounge (with free coffee and tea) and lockers that were accessible before check-in and after check-out; great and spacious room with big lockers (very nice) and good beds; nice breakfast at MK's; and very kind, helpful, and interested staff. If there is any small minus to find, it would be that the downstairs/outside music can be heard rather loud in the room I was staying in (but nothing that earplugs can't keep out). All in all a wonderful experience and highly recommended hostel 🙏😊

Convenient and relaxing hostel with high quality of services. Central location (less than 1 min from central square), immediate response to client's requests and nice decorated space. Highly promote the specific hostel for visitors.

I had an excellent time at ISSA in early November! The rooms and common areas were very nice and well organized and equipped and the staff were really friendly and helpful with everything I needed. It can be noisy during the night on weekends and holidays so earplugs come handy:) totally recommended!!

Probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed at. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was great. Room was big and clean and new. The breakfast was a voucher for a local cafe which was also 10/10. Can’t recommend enough.
