Verscholen in het dorp Eresos, een van de meest legendarische hoekjes van Lesbos en de mythische geboorteplaats van de antieke dichteres Sappho, biedt Mezen een gastvrij toevluchtsoord voor reizigers die de rustigere zuidwestelijke uithoeken van het eiland verkennen. Het restaurant put uit de rijke mezedes-traditie van de Griekse keuken, waarbij het plezier van een maaltijd niet schuilt in één enkel gerecht, maar in het ontspannen delen van vele kleine hapjes — borden met lokale olijven, kazen, gegrilde groenten en zeevruchten die de ritmes van de Egeïsche voorraadkast weerspiegelen. Het is het soort plek waar een middaglunch moeiteloos uitloopt tot het begin van de avond, vergezeld van lokale wijn of ouzo en de ongedwongen gesprekken van een dorp dat al lang vrije geesten en nieuwsgierige reizigers aantrekt.
Eresos zelf ligt op korte afstand landinwaarts van de lange zandige kuststrook van Skala Eresou, en Mezen is een vanzelfsprekende tussenstop voor of na een dag aan het strand, of tijdens het verkennen van de Byzantijnse ruïnes en het volksmuseum van het dorp. De sfeer is doorgaans rustig en oprecht, gevormd door het karakter van een gemeenschap die goede spijs en goed gezelschap in gelijke mate waardeert. Bezoekers die de reis maken naar dit verre uithoek van Lesbos — en het is een reis die de moeite waard is — zullen in Mezen een plek vinden die het beste van de eilandhospitaliteit belichaamt: eerlijke keuken, een warm welkom en een omgeving die u eraan herinnert waarom u hier gekomen bent.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Bij Mezen komen de kleine gerechten één voor één — olijven, gegrilde groenten, lokale kazen, zeevruchten — en de maaltijd neemt het tempo van het dorp over, niet dat van de klok. Eresos heeft een eigen zwaartekracht, met zijn geplaveide straatjes en een gemeenschap die altijd nieuwsgierige reizigers heeft aangetrokken, en dat gevoel sijpelt door aan tafel.
Beste tijd om te gaan
Eind lente tot begin herfst is de mooiste periode; augustus is drukker, maar het dorp behoudt zijn rustige karakter.
Hoe er te komen
Vanuit Mytilene rijdt u ongeveer een uur naar het westen door het binnenland van Lesbos om Eresos te bereiken; het restaurant ligt in het centrum van het dorp.

Good meals and service I had shrimp in ouzo wife had stiffaldo. Served nice and hot was very tasty.

Food is lovely and very traditional, service is excellent especially the one with big belly and the one with the bigger belly, and of course the one who takes the money. It's a great atmosphere and very friendly, thanks for a great night again. We will be back.

We ate twice here in one week because the food was so good the first time round. Pictures attached are of the lamb ribs, Stifado (beef and onion stew), Giovetsi (beef tomato and pasta stew) and shrimps. Everything was really tasty and well done. The table bread was a bit stale and not the best. Service was good on our first visit but quite frantic on the second visit because it was so busy. For a really good meal here this is a great choice.

From the very first bite, this place won our hearts. We enjoyed perfectly cooked sea bass with fresh vegetables, a crisp and flavorful Greek salad, and beautifully roasted eggplants that melted in the mouth. Paired with a glass of local wine and a splash of ouzo 🌝, it turned into an unforgettable feast. The staff were not only professional but genuinely warm and attentive, making us feel truly welcome. A spot I’d recommend 100% to anyone wanting an authentic taste of the region.

In our opinion, easily the best restaurant in the village. The menu was a bit more inventive than the typical Greek restaurant and the food was excellent. We always sat outside on the terrace to enjoy the view and watch the world go by. Service was friendly and we had a complimentary mini Magnum type of ice cream for dessert. By our third visit they knew our drinks choices and that my husband would decline the ice cream! It’s right next to the church and the bell strikes every hour which always made us jump! It also gave us an excellent view of a wedding which was a bonus.
