Verscholen in het beboste bergdorp Agiasos is de Panagia van Agiasos een van de meest vereerde religieuze plaatsen op het eiland en een plek van diepe spirituele betekenis voor de bevolking van Lesbos. De kerk herbergt een vereerde icoon van de Maagd Maria die volgens de overlevering eeuwen geleden naar het eiland werd gebracht, en trekt al generaties lang gelovigen aan uit heel Griekenland en daarbuiten. Het stenen kloostercomplex bevindt zich in het hart van de middeleeuwse architectuur van het dorp, omringd door kastanjebomen en de kronkelende geplaveide straatjes die Agiasos zijn kenmerkende, tijdloze karakter geven.
De pelgrimstocht bereikt haar hoogtepunt tijdens het Feest van Maria Tenhemelopneming op 15 augustus, wanneer duizenden gelovigen de bergwegen bestijgen om de liturgie bij te wonen, kaarsen op te steken en de zegen van de icoon te zoeken. De sfeer tijdens deze periode is buitengewoon — een mengeling van plechtige devotie, gemeenschappelijke samenkomst en de bijzondere warmte van Grieks-orthodoxe dorpsviering. Maar het heiligdom is het hele jaar door een bezoek waard; buiten de grote feestdagen biedt de kerk een stille, contemplatieve ruimte waar de frisse berglucht en de geur van wierook een werkelijk ontroerende atmosfeer scheppen.
Voor bezoekers is de Panagia van Agiasos niet louter een religieus monument, maar een venster op de levende culturele en spirituele identiteit van Lesbos. Een bezoek sluit van nature aan bij een verkenning van Agiasos zelf, een van de meest charmante en authentieke dorpen van het eiland, bekend om zijn carnavalstraditie, lokaal aardewerk en uitstekende tavernes die de traditionele keuken van Lesbos serveren. Of u nu als pelgrim of als nieuwsgierige reiziger komt, dit heiligdom laat een blijvende indruk achter.

Wat u kunt verwachten
Zodra u het stenen kloostercomplex betreedt, omhult u de koele berglucht met een vage geur van wierook en kaarsen — een stilte die verdiend aanvoelt na de kronkelende weg door de kastanjebomen. Locals komen een kaars opsteken en rustig zitten; pelgrims uit heel Griekenland komen om het oude icoon van de Maagd Maria te vereren. Buiten de grote feestdagen kunt u de binnenplaats bijna voor uzelf hebben.
Beste tijd om te gaan
15 augustus, het feest van de Tenhemelopneming, trekt de grootste drukte en de indrukwekkendste sfeer; lente en herfst bieden koelere berglucht en een rustiger bezoek.
Hoe er te komen
Agiasos ligt op ongeveer 25–30 minuten rijden van Mytilini, via de weg die het beboste binnenland van Lesbos in gaat. Het dorp is goed bewegwijzerd en het klooster bevindt zich in het centrum.

Once in Agiasos, one should probably visit it. The only problem is the poor state of the rest rooms.

Beautiful and sacred place. Filled with loving energy. Even for us non-orthodox people, this church is a holy place. Be sure to look at the exquisitely wrought chandeliers. Bring a scarf to cover your head, bare shoulders, or bare legs our of respect. No photos allowed inside the church.

Lovely little church way up a mountain. Nice quiet byzantine vibe here. Priests were ultra friendly. Very few gift shops out the front, mostly cafes and restaurants. Incredibly out of the way place you would really have to know you were coming here to find it as my party did.

A must see village up on the mountain with a church full of devotions from the faithful people. We tried the local pie called Vassilopita which is sold at the bakery in the middle of the village and it's costly (paid 8 € for a piece packed vacuum), tried the coffee and it was all amazing.

This is an important historical church with such an interesting history as well as being spectacular, especially for such a relatively small town. A real must see. Loved it inside and out. You walk through a door in a wall and it’s such a lovely surprise to see this wonderful building. It used to be a monastery hence the surrounding wall. I especially was entranced by the beautiful array of lights in this church.

I’m an atheist but couldn’t resist visiting this amazing church. Peak aesthetics, one of the most intriguing interior designs I’ve ever seen in an Orthodox church. Moreover, it has been built since 1176. Love it.

There you can see the miraculous icon of Panagia from Sion, created by Evangelist Loukas. The church is at the centre of picturesque village Agiasos. At the yard of the church there is a museum with artifacts connected with the history of the Icon and the village through the ages. A must place to visit at Lesvos island in Greece.
