About

Nestled in the forested mountain village of Agiasos, the Panagia of Agiasos is one of the most venerated religious sites on the island and a place of deep spiritual significance for the people of Lesvos. The church enshrines a revered icon of the Virgin Mary that tradition holds was brought to the island centuries ago, and it has drawn the faithful from across Greece and beyond for generations. The stone-built monastery complex sits at the heart of the village's medieval-era architecture, surrounded by chestnut trees and the winding cobbled lanes that give Agiasos its distinctive, timeless character.

The pilgrimage reaches its peak during the Feast of the Assumption on the 15th of August, when thousands of devotees make their way up the mountain roads to attend liturgy, light candles, and seek the blessing of the icon. The atmosphere during this period is extraordinary — a blend of solemn devotion, communal gathering, and the particular warmth of Greek Orthodox village celebration. But the site is worth visiting at any time of year; outside of the major feast days, the church offers a quiet, contemplative space where the cool mountain air and the scent of incense create a genuinely moving atmosphere.

For visitors, the Panagia of Agiasos is not simply a religious landmark but a window into the living cultural and spiritual identity of Lesvos. A visit pairs naturally with an exploration of Agiasos itself, one of the island's most charming and authentic villages, famous for its carnival tradition, local pottery, and excellent tavernas serving traditional Lesbian cuisine. Whether you come as a pilgrim or a curious traveller, this site leaves a lasting impression.

Before you go

What to expect

Step inside the stone monastery complex and the cool mountain air carries the faint scent of incense and candle wax — a stillness that feels earned after the winding road up through the chestnuts. Locals come to light a candle and sit quietly; pilgrims from across Greece come to venerate the ancient icon of the Virgin Mary. Outside the feast days, you may have the courtyard almost to yourself.

Best time to visit

August 15th for the Feast of the Assumption draws the largest crowds and the most intense atmosphere; spring and autumn offer cooler mountain air and a quieter, more contemplative visit.

How to get there

Agiasos is roughly 25–30 minutes by car from Mytilene, heading inland through the mountains on the road toward the island's forested interior. The village is well-signposted and the monastery sits at its heart.

Once in Agiasos, one should probably visit it. The only problem is the poor state of the rest rooms.

Beautiful and sacred place. Filled with loving energy. Even for us non-orthodox people, this church is a holy place. Be sure to look at the exquisitely wrought chandeliers. Bring a scarf to cover your head, bare shoulders, or bare legs our of respect. No photos allowed inside the church.

Lovely little church way up a mountain. Nice quiet byzantine vibe here. Priests were ultra friendly. Very few gift shops out the front, mostly cafes and restaurants. Incredibly out of the way place you would really have to know you were coming here to find it as my party did.

A must see village up on the mountain with a church full of devotions from the faithful people. We tried the local pie called Vassilopita which is sold at the bakery in the middle of the village and it's costly (paid 8 € for a piece packed vacuum), tried the coffee and it was all amazing.

This is an important historical church with such an interesting history as well as being spectacular, especially for such a relatively small town. A real must see. Loved it inside and out. You walk through a door in a wall and it’s such a lovely surprise to see this wonderful building. It used to be a monastery hence the surrounding wall. I especially was entranced by the beautiful array of lights in this church.

I’m an atheist but couldn’t resist visiting this amazing church. Peak aesthetics, one of the most intriguing interior designs I’ve ever seen in an Orthodox church. Moreover, it has been built since 1176. Love it.

There you can see the miraculous icon of Panagia from Sion, created by Evangelist Loukas. The church is at the centre of picturesque village Agiasos. At the yard of the church there is a museum with artifacts connected with the history of the Icon and the village through the ages. A must place to visit at Lesvos island in Greece.
