This was the place we loved the most during our 4-day Çanakkale holiday. We were very well received, and we were very pleased with the sea and the cleanliness of everything. You can go there with peace of mind. Thank you very much, this will be our only address when we are in the area again.

About this Beach

Abelia Beach is a secluded stretch of shoreline tucked along the quieter northwestern reaches of Lesvos, close to the small settlement that shares its name. This part of the island remains largely off the beaten tourist trail, and Abelia reflects that character well — a place where the Aegean laps at a pebbly shore with the unhurried rhythm that defines the island's less-visited coast. The waters here are typically clear and calm, sheltered enough for a relaxed swim, with the deep blue typical of the northeastern Aegean that shifts to turquoise in the shallows. The surrounding landscape of low scrub, olive groves, and rocky hillsides gives the beach an authentic, unmanicured feel that many visitors find a refreshing contrast to more developed resort beaches.

Facilities at Abelia Beach are minimal, which is very much part of its appeal. Visitors should come prepared with their own water, snacks, and shade, as the absence of beach bars and sun-bed rentals is the trade-off for the solitude. The shore is composed of small pebbles and coarse sand, so water shoes are a practical consideration. Access requires navigating rural roads typical of this part of Lesvos, making a car essential. The best time to visit is from late May through September, with July and August offering the warmest water temperatures; arriving in the morning hours rewards visitors with the calmest sea conditions and the light at its most luminous on the water.

What makes Abelia special is precisely its simplicity. In a corner of Lesvos that has retained its pastoral identity, this beach offers something increasingly rare along Mediterranean coastlines — genuine quietude. The northwestern interior of the island has long been shaped by olive cultivation and fishing traditions, and the sense of that unhurried way of life carries down to the shoreline. For travellers willing to seek it out, Abelia Beach delivers an honest encounter with the Aegean, unembellished and all the more memorable for it.

Before you go

What to expect

Abelia is the kind of beach where you may well have the shore to yourself — pebbles and coarse sand meeting water that shifts from deep blue to turquoise in the shallows, framed by olive groves and rocky scrubland. There are no sunbeds, no bar, and no crowds; bring everything you need and settle into the unhurried rhythm of this quiet northwestern corner. Water shoes are worth packing for the pebbly entry.

Best time to visit

Late May through September; July and August have the warmest water, and arriving in the morning gives you the calmest sea and the most luminous light.

How to get there

Abelia is roughly 43 km from Mytilene as the crow flies, but the drive through the island's rural northwest takes considerably longer than that suggests. A car is essential — the final approach follows narrow country lanes with no public transport.

The establishment is nice and the sea is beautiful, but the wind starts in the afternoon and the sea becomes choppy. It's ridiculous that they're still charging an entrance fee in 2025; Turkish businesses should stop this practice. Instead of an entrance fee, there should be a spending limit.

It was lovely to meet the family-run owners at the place we visited as a family. Those with young children will understand. The place is peaceful, there's ample space between the sunbeds, everything is clean, the sand is fine and plentiful, and the sea is sandy too. We were lucky enough to get a table under the stunning eucalyptus tree due to a cancelled reservation; we loved both the shade and the view from under it. Although breakfast isn't a main service, the food offered was incredibly fresh and plentiful, and I really enjoyed the tea – finding delicious tea on a beach was a surprise. The coffee was tasty, and my baby loved the dumplings. I already love the sea in this area, and I will definitely choose this place again when I return.

It's truly the epitome of peace and tranquility! The beach is so calm that you wake up to the sound of birds chirping in the morning; there's no other noise. The sea is crystal clear, pristine, and a deep blue… You can even see the fish! It's a paradise for families with children. The beach is shallow and safe, and the hotel staff are incredibly attentive and friendly to children. Away from the crowds and noise; it's perfect for anyone who wants to relax and be surrounded by nature. We were all amazed as a family and are already thinking about making reservations for next year!

A wonderful sea, a calm atmosphere, delicious food, friendly service... A place that deserves a 10 out of 10. Especially regarding the setting, I can say "I couldn't have imagined a place this beautiful even if I had imagined it myself." You can choose to sunbathe all day on the sunbeds, or you can use the sheltered area to spend the whole day in the shade, or you can cool off under the sunbeds under the trees, listening to the sound of the wind. After experiencing it on the first day, both my wife and I, as well as our children (15-18 years old), chose Abelia Beach for 3 consecutive days without even feeling the need to look anywhere else. It's a place I would very much like to go back to and can wholeheartedly recommend.

My friend and I visited today. We left very satisfied with the owners' friendliness, the hygiene, the peaceful atmosphere, the design, the clientele, and the very reasonable prices. We look forward to seeing you again next summer. A 10/10 establishment.

We had a lovely day at Abelia Beach. A rather chic beach, a nice little restaurant, a good beach, although some details could be improved: the men's toilet door doesn't close, and there are exposed electrical cables in the changing room. Regarding prices: the "High Season" prices are high but acceptable (except for the ice cream, which was 170 TL! It's the same price whether you kids get 1, 2 or 3 small scoops... Go to Kucukkuyu instead, ~25 TL per scoop).

Today we had a wonderful day in a small cove. For those who want to escape the stress of the city and be alone with nature, this is a true paradise. We arrived early in the morning and started the day with the clean air. Sunbathing on comfortable sunbeds by the beach and swimming in the cool waters was truly delightful. For lunch, we tried the restaurant's famous hamburgers. They were really high quality and delicious. I never thought hamburgers could be so good. Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to walk in the shade of olive trees. Being so surrounded by nature was peaceful. We enjoyed peaceful moments reading books and taking in the scenery. The owner's friendliness and hospitality made our experience even better. They helped us with everything and made us feel right at home. At sunset, we sat on the beach and enjoyed the exquisite view. Watching the sun set over the sea was truly an unforgettable experience. If you also want to spend a calm and peaceful day, you should definitely visit this place. It was an unforgettable experience for us, and we plan to go back as soon as possible.

A wonderful beachfront location! The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. You'll notice the fresh ingredients in every dish. The friendly and warm approach of the owner and staff makes you feel right at home. The sea is crystal clear, and the sun loungers are comfortable. Be sure to stop by for a delightful day among the olive trees.
