About this Beach

Eftalou sits on the northern coast just east of Molyvos, where the volcanic geology that defines this part of the island creates a coastline of warm stone and mineral-rich water. The beach itself is a mix of pebbles and flat rock, less conventionally beautiful than the sandy beaches of the south but remarkable for its proximity to the famous Eftalou thermal baths — an ancient stone bathhouse where volcanic hot springs seep directly into the sea. Swimming here means alternating between the cool Aegean and pockets of naturally heated water, an experience unlike anything else on the island. Further east, Golden Beach offers a sandier stretch with a popular restaurant and sections where clothing is optional. The coastline between Eftalou and Skala Sikaminias is one of the most scenic drives on Lesvos, with the Turkish coast visible across the strait.

Before you go

What to expect

The dark volcanic rock retains heat through the afternoon, and as you wade in from the pebbled shore you feel warm plumes rising from the seabed — the thermal springs that feed the ancient bathhouse just above the waterline. Most visitors settle into a rhythm of alternating the cool open Aegean with these naturally heated pockets, a combination found nowhere else on the island. The Turkish coastline across the strait sits close enough to feel almost within reach.

Best time to visit

Late May through October for swimming; spring and early autumn keep crowds thin while the thermal waters remain warm throughout the year.

How to get there

Drive north from Mytilene toward Kalloni, then continue up to Molyvos — allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours on the winding inland road. Efthalou lies a few kilometres east of Molyvos along the coastal road.
