Makara
About this Beach
Makara is a quiet gravel beach tucked along the northern coastline of Lesvos near the small settlement of Apothikes, offering the kind of unhurried escape that draws those willing to venture beyond the island's more visited shores. The beach is carpeted in smooth, rounded pebbles and coarse gravel — the result of centuries of gentle wave action working against the volcanic and sedimentary rock that defines much of this stretch of the Aegean coastline. The stones underfoot give the water a characteristic clarity, as the absence of fine sand means less suspension in the shallows, and the sea here takes on deep shades of turquoise and cobalt that reward the patient traveller.
The surrounding landscape is raw and largely undeveloped, with the scrubby hills of the northern Lesvos interior rolling down toward the shore and providing a sense of seclusion that is increasingly rare. Facilities at Makara are minimal, reflecting its off-the-beaten-path character, so visitors are well advised to arrive self-sufficient with water, food, and sun shade. The lack of crowds is itself a draw, and the beach tends to attract those who come to Lesvos seeking authentic stillness rather than organised amenities. Snorkelling along the rocky outcrops at either end of the bay can reveal sea urchins, small fish, and the mossy underwater formations typical of the northeastern Aegean.
The best time to visit is between late May and early September, when the sea has warmed sufficiently for comfortable swimming and the meltemi winds, which can stir the northern coast, are more predictable. Mornings tend to be calmer and the light is softer, making this an ideal spot for an early swim before the afternoon breeze picks up. Getting here requires a car, as the road through Apothikes that leads to the beach is narrow and not served by public transport, but that accessibility barrier is precisely what keeps Makara serene and unspoiled — a small, honest corner of Lesvos that rewards the curious.
Before you go
What to expect
The shoreline is made up of smooth pale pebbles that keep the water startlingly clear — you can see the seabed well out into the bay, and the shallows shift from pale green to deep cobalt as the depth increases. The hills press close behind, bare and scrubby, giving Makara the feel of a place that hasn't been tidied up for visitors. There are no sunbeds or tavernas here, so bring everything you need and plan to spend the day in genuine quiet, with snorkeling along the rocky edges as the main activity.
Best time to visit
Late May through early September is the right window for swimming; mornings are notably calmer before the afternoon meltemi builds along the northern coast.
How to get there
Makara is roughly 42 kilometres from Mytilene — allow about an hour's drive west through the island's interior toward the Apothikes area. A car is essential, as the narrow lane through the settlement that leads to the beach has no bus service.
