Petra Beach
About this Beach
Petra Beach is the most organised and accessible beach on the northern coast of Lesvos, stretching along the waterfront below the dramatic rock formation that gives the village its name. Sunbed and umbrella rentals line the sand, restaurants and cafes sit just steps away, and the swimming is reliably calm and family-friendly. The defining landmark is the massive volcanic rock that rises from the village centre, crowned by the 17th-century Panagia Glykofilousa church — you can see it from every point along the beach. Petra functions as a proper resort town, with good infrastructure for families: shallow water, clean sand, nearby shops, and easy parking. Yet it never feels over-developed. The combination of the dramatic geological backdrop, the working fishing harbour at one end, and the authentic Greek village atmosphere behind the beach give Petra a character that larger resort destinations cannot match.
Before you go
What to expect
The volcanic rock that towers over the shoreline makes Petra Beach unlike any other organised beach on the island — you spend the afternoon watching the church on the summit catch the golden light while families splash in the shallows below. Sunbeds and cafes make it effortless, but the fishing harbour at the northern end and the village lanes directly behind the sand keep things feeling genuinely Greek rather than resort-processed.
Best time to visit
Late June through September for swimming; June or early September offer the same calm water with noticeably fewer visitors than peak August.
How to get there
From Mytilene, head north through Kalloni and continue toward the north coast — the drive takes roughly an hour through olive groves and rolling hills, with Petra signposted well before arrival.
