Before you go

What to expect

Gavatha is a quietly working harbour where fishing boats share the water with leisure swimmers. The sandy beach sits at the foot of a village that still earns its living from the sea, and the monastery watching from the hillside gives the whole scene an unexpectedly contemplative quality. Flat access and waterside seating make it easy to settle in and let a morning pass slowly.

Best time to visit

June through September for swimming; May and October bring calm seas and almost no crowds.

How to get there

From Mytilene, drive northwest toward Kalloni then continue to the western coast — allow roughly an hour and a half. Gavvathas sits at the end of the road, so just follow the village signs.
