The chapel located in Aigasos. Its garden and interior design are magnificent. A sacred place where holy relics were hidden by Saint Agothon.
A beautiful little church! Anyone who visits the wonderful Agiasos, in addition to the Virgin Mary of Agiasos, deserves to worship there as well.
About
Nestled in the verdant landscape near Agiasos, the Holy Chapel of Zoodochos Pigi takes its name from one of the most beloved dedications in Greek Orthodox tradition — Zoodochos Pigi, meaning the Life-Giving Spring. Chapels bearing this name are typically associated with a sacred natural spring, and they occupy a special place in the hearts of local communities, serving as quiet sanctuaries where faith and the natural world intertwine. The setting near Agiasos, a village celebrated for its well-preserved medieval character and deep-rooted traditions, lends this small chapel an atmosphere that feels both timeless and deeply connected to the rhythms of island life.
Visitors who make their way here will find the kind of intimate, unadorned devotional space that defines rural Greek religious architecture — modest in scale but rich in spiritual feeling. The surrounding countryside, with its olive groves and pine-covered hillsides typical of the Agiasos interior, makes the journey itself a rewarding one. Whether you arrive on the feast day associated with the Life-Giving Spring, celebrated in the Orthodox calendar on the Friday after Easter, or simply stumble upon the chapel during a drive through the Lesvos heartland, the sense of stillness and continuity with centuries of island faith is palpable.
For travelers exploring beyond the coast, this chapel offers a genuine glimpse into the devotional landscape of rural Lesvos. It is the kind of place that reveals itself quietly — a roadside candle flickering inside, the faint scent of incense, an icon softened by years of veneration. Paired with a visit to Agiasos itself, one of the most atmospheric villages on the island, the chapel makes for a meaningful stop on any cultural itinerary through the Lesbian interior.
Before you go
What to expect
The chapel is small and unadorned — the kind of rural Greek devotional space where a single oil lamp burns before an aged icon and the faint scent of incense lingers. The olive groves and pine-covered slopes surrounding it make the approach as quietly rewarding as the chapel itself. It rewards the unhurried visitor who pairs it with a walk through nearby Agiasos.
Best time to visit
Late spring is especially meaningful — the feast of Zoodochos Pigi falls on the Friday after Orthodox Easter, drawing local worshippers to the chapel.
How to get there
From Mytilene, drive inland toward Agiasos — the journey takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes. The chapel lies in the Agiasos area; locals in the village can point you to it.

Beautiful small church within the settlement. Inside the hagiographies are unique and beautifully vivid. The saints on Lesvos beautiful hagiography. The burning lamp, the blessing outside in the courtyard and the tranquility you feel makes you want to come back again.

A mysterious Orthodox Christian Church dating back to the 9th century AD when the monk Agathon hid the holy relics in 803 AD. This church was the basis of today's wonderful village of Agiasos. Essentially, it is two chapels: Zoodochos Pigi and Agathonos Ephesus.

You will be very lucky if you'll be here in this village on 15th of August. It's a great day and almost all the local people of the island are there to celebrate this big day. I'm truly impressed when I learned that most of them are getting there by feet, they are walking for hours because it's a tradition. It's a wonderful place to visit, it's friendly and it has a lot of taverns with very good food.
