About

Keramidi Beach lies on the wild western coast of Lesvos, tucked near the small fishing village of Sigri in one of the island's most unspoiled corners. This stretch of coastline sits within the broader landscape shaped by the ancient Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a natural monument of global significance where volcanic silica preserved entire trees millions of years ago. The setting lends Keramidi a sense of geological drama that goes well beyond an ordinary beach visit — the rugged terrain, the dark volcanic rock formations, and the deep blue of the Aegean here feel genuinely elemental.

The beach itself is characterized by clear, clean water and a quieter, more secluded atmosphere than the resorts of the eastern coast. Sigri's remoteness has kept this part of Lesvos largely free from mass tourism, which means Keramidi rewards those willing to make the journey with uncrowded shores and a more authentic connection to the island's natural landscape. The prevailing winds of the western Aegean can pick up in the afternoons, making early mornings here especially serene, with the light falling across the water in long golden angles.

For visitors exploring western Lesvos, Keramidi Beach makes a natural complement to a day that might also include the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in Sigri and the fossil sites scattered across the surrounding hills. It is the kind of place that rewards slow travel — arriving without a schedule, swimming in remarkably clear water, and absorbing a corner of Greece that still feels genuinely off the beaten path.

Before you go

What to expect

Dark volcanic rock formations meet remarkably clear water, giving this shore a raw, elemental quality distinct from anything on the busier eastern coast. Mornings are especially serene — the light falls across the water at long golden angles before the afternoon westerly breeze picks up. Expect uncrowded sand, a strong sense of geological drama from the surrounding Petrified Forest landscape, and the kind of quiet that makes an unscheduled swim feel like a genuine discovery.

Best time to visit

May through October for swimming; mornings are ideal to catch calm seas and the best light before the afternoon winds build.

How to get there

From Mytilene, follow the road west toward Sigri — the drive winds through the island's quieter interior and takes roughly an hour and a half. Keramidi Beach lies just outside Sigri village on the coast.

It's impossible to get there by car, so we wasted our time. We reached the village on the left, on the beach. It was also deserted. Google leads us down a road into a cliff.
