Petrified Forest of Lesvos - Museum & Park
Πάρκο Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Μπαλή Αλώνια
About
The world's most important petrified forest site and Lesvos's top-rated natural attraction. Features extensive hiking trails through ancient fossilized trees set in breathtaking volcanic landscapes, complemented by an excellent museum with geological exhibits. Highly praised for both the outdoor experience and educational displays on this 20-million-year-old forest.
Before you go
What to expect
Walking among trees that turned to stone 20 million years ago, set against a stark volcanic landscape, gives the site an almost otherworldly stillness — the scale of geological time becomes tangible underfoot. The museum inside complements the trails well, offering clear exhibits that make the fossilized trunks outside feel even more extraordinary.
Best time to visit
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons; the western tip of Lesvos bakes in summer, and the open trails offer little shade.
How to get there
Sigri sits at the far western end of the island, around 90 minutes by car from Mytilene following the road through Kalloni.
