About

Studios Maro offers comfortable self-catering accommodation in Skala Kalloni, the small seaside resort town on the shores of the Gulf of Kalloni in the heart of Lesvos. The studios are designed with independent travelers in mind, providing the space and amenities to settle in and explore the island at your own pace, with kitchen facilities that allow guests to cook fresh local produce picked up from nearby markets.

Skala Kalloni is one of Lesvos's most rewarding bases, sitting at the edge of the famous Kalloni Salt Pans, a designated Natura 2000 wetland that attracts birdwatchers from across Europe. The gulf's shallow, warm waters are renowned for producing some of the finest sardines in Greece, and the tavernas along the waterfront make the most of this local bounty. Staying at Studios Maro puts guests within easy reach of this culinary and natural richness.

The central location also makes Studios Maro a practical choice for touring the whole island. Whether you're heading north to the medieval village of Molyvos, east toward the capital Mytilene, or west to explore the petrified forest near Sigri, Skala Kalloni sits roughly equidistant from many of Lesvos's top attractions, making it an ideal hub for a full island itinerary.

Before you go

What to expect

Waking up here puts you steps from the waterfront where fishing boats unload the gulf's famous sardines — the same ones that turn up grilled at the tavernas that evening. The salt pans begin right at the edge of town, and in spring the shallow mudflats fill with flamingos and waders that draw serious birders from across Europe. A kitchen means you can pick up fresh produce at the local market and eat on your own schedule.

Best time to visit

Spring (April–May) is peak season for birdwatching at the salt pans; summer brings the full sardine season on taverna menus and warmer swimming in the shallow gulf.

How to get there

Skala Kalloni is about a 35–40 minute drive west from Mytilene along the central island road. Most visitors come by rental car, which you'll want anyway to take advantage of the village's position midway between the island's main attractions.
