Kalloni Sardine Festival

Kalloni's PDO-protected sardines — widely considered the finest in Greece — are grilled along the harbor by the barrel, washed down with local retsina. Two evenings of island bands, shared tables along the waterfront, and a fisherman's market of the gulf's catch. A long-running local tradition that draws Athenians back home for the weekend.

Panagia Glykofilousa — Pilgrimage at Petra

On the feast of the Dormition, pilgrims climb the 114 stone steps to the church perched atop the rock that gives Petra its name. The icon of Panagia Glykofilousa — the "Sweet-Kissing Virgin" — has drawn devotees for over 250 years. The village below fills with music, food, and a service that carries through the night.

Panigiri of the Virgin Mary — Agiasos

Agiasos

Many locals consider this the largest religious festival on Lesvos. The icon of Panagia Vrefokratousa — attributed by tradition to St. Luke — draws pilgrims from across the island to the mountain village of Agiasos. Expect days of celebration: hand-cut chilopites in the tavernas, ouzeri spilling into the cobbled streets, and bouzouki echoing through the plane trees past dawn.

Europe's largest annual LGBTQ+ women's gathering, held each September in the birthplace of the poet Sappho. A full week of concerts, films, workshops, beach parties, and community events draws thousands to Skala Eressos from around the world. Running continuously since 2000.

Feast of Taxiarchis — Mantamados

Mantamados Monastery

One of Greece's most important pilgrimages, centered on the relief icon of Archangel Michael at the Monastery of Mantamados — said by tradition to have been molded from the blood and clay of martyred monks in the 10th century. Pilgrims arrive from across Greece for the vigil, the liturgy, and the traditional offering at the monastery.
