Πυραμιές
Pyramies
About this Beach
Pyramies is a quiet, unspoiled beach tucked along the northeastern coastline of Lesvos, taking its name from the distinctive pyramid-like rock formations that punctuate the shoreline and give this stretch of coast its striking, sculptural character. Situated near the small settlement of Skala Neon Kydonion — a village whose very name carries the weight of history, as it was founded by refugees from Kydonies (present-day Ayvalik on the Turkish coast) following the 1923 population exchange — the beach sits within a landscape shaped by both natural forces and the deep human stories of the Aegean. The proximity to the narrow straits between Lesvos and the Anatolian shore means the sea here is typically calm and well-protected, with waters that remain extraordinarily clear and take on deep shades of turquoise and sapphire in the summer light.
The shore at Pyramies is a mix of fine pebbles and coarse sand, characteristic of northeastern Lesvos beaches, with the rocky outcrops creating natural coves that offer pockets of shade and shelter. The seabed shelves gently, making entry into the water easy and comfortable, and the calm conditions make it particularly suitable for swimming, snorkeling among the rocks, and simply floating in the tranquil sea. Facilities here are minimal, preserving the beach's natural character, so visitors are best advised to come prepared with supplies. The surrounding landscape of low scrub, olive groves, and the ever-present scent of wild herbs contributes to a sense of peaceful remoteness that is increasingly rare. The best time to visit is from late May through September, when the water is warm and the long Aegean light makes the pyramid rocks glow amber and gold in the late afternoon sun.
Before you go
What to expect
The pyramid-shaped rocks that give this beach its name rise from the shoreline to create sheltered natural coves where the water pools a still, deep turquoise. The seabed slopes gently, so entry is easy, and the calm of the narrow strait between Lesvos and the Anatolian coast makes snorkeling around the rocky outcrops or simply drifting on the surface a genuinely peaceful experience. Facilities are scarce, so come prepared with food and water and plan to stay for the afternoon.
Best time to visit
Late May through September for warm swimming water; June and early September offer comfortable conditions without the peak July–August crowds.
How to get there
Pyramies is roughly 17 km northeast of Mytilene by road, near the small settlement of Skala Neon Kydonion; the drive along the northeastern coast typically takes around 20–25 minutes.
