Skala Eresou Beach
About this Beach
Skala Eresou is widely regarded as the finest beach on Lesvos, and among the best in all of Greece. This long, wide stretch of dark golden sand curves along the southwestern coast, backed by the atmospheric ruins of the ancient basilica and the modern village that has grown up around it. The water is calm and shallow for a good distance, making it ideal for families with children, while a section at the far end has long been clothing-optional. Behind the beach, a freshwater lake attracts turtles and migratory birds, adding an unexpected natural dimension to a day at the shore. The waterfront is lined with tavernas, cafes, and bars, giving Skala Eresou a vibrant social scene that carries on well into the evening. It was here that the poet Sappho was born in the 7th century BC, and the village retains a literary, bohemian character that sets it apart from other resort beaches on the island. Whether you come for the swimming, the sunsets, or the atmosphere, this is the beach that defines Lesvos at its best.
Before you go
What to expect
The beach reveals itself in layers: wide dark-golden sand curving along the coast, the skeletal arches of an early Christian basilica rising at the edge of the village, and a freshwater lagoon just behind the dunes where terrapins bask and wading birds pick through the shallows. The waterfront tavernas and bars gather pace around sundown, and the crowd that fills them — drawn as much by Sappho's legacy as by the swimming — gives the place an unhurried, free-spirited energy unlike any other beach on the island.
Best time to visit
May through October for swimming; June and September offer the best balance of warm water and manageable crowds, while August is lively but busy.
How to get there
From Mytilene, allow around 90 minutes by car heading west and south through the olive-covered interior, winding through several villages before the road descends to the coast at Skala Eresou.
