About
Archontiko Petras 1821 stands as a living testament to the prosperous merchant era that shaped northern Lesvos during the nineteenth century. The name "archontiko" — the Greek word for a manor house or nobleman's residence — speaks to the building's origins as a grand private home, and the date 1821 anchors it to one of the most charged moments in modern Greek history, the year the War of Independence began. Petra itself is one of Lesvos's most distinctive villages, built in the shadow of a great solitary rock crowned by the beloved church of Panagia Glykofilousa, and it is in this atmospheric setting that the archontiko has found a second life as a place of hospitality.
Guests and visitors who step inside encounter the hallmarks of traditional Aegean aristocratic architecture: thick stone walls that keep the summer heat at bay, high-ceilinged rooms, and the careful craftsmanship of an age when wealthy island families built to last. This kind of converted mansion offers something increasingly rare in Greek island tourism — a sense of genuine continuity with the past, where the building itself is as much a part of the experience as anything on the menu or in the room. Whether it operates as a guesthouse, a café, or a restaurant, the character of the space invites visitors to slow down and absorb the layered history of a village that once thrived on the olive trade and the sea.
For travellers exploring the Kalloni Gulf region or making their way along Lesvos's northern coast, Archontiko Petras 1821 represents the kind of stop that turns a sightseeing day into a memory. Petra is already worth visiting for its dramatic rock and its traditional plateia, and an establishment rooted in a building of this age and pedigree adds a depth of atmosphere that newer venues simply cannot replicate. It is the sort of place where architecture, history, and hospitality quietly reinforce one another.
Before you go
What to expect
Stepping inside, the thick stone walls drop the temperature several degrees even on the hottest August afternoon — a reminder that this building was engineered to endure. High-ceilinged rooms and careful period craftsmanship create an atmosphere that is unhurried and genuinely historic, quite different from the whitewashed island aesthetic most visitors expect. The backdrop of Petra's famous solitary rock and the village plateia just outside completes the sense of arriving somewhere with real weight to it.
Best time to visit
Late spring through early autumn is ideal; summer afternoons inside the cool stone rooms are particularly rewarding when the heat outside is at its peak.
How to get there
From Mytilene, take the main road northwest toward Kalloni and then continue north toward Petra — the drive is roughly 50–55 km and takes about an hour.

First and foremost, Mrs. Eugenia, the manager, is an incredibly kind and always willing to assist. The venue itself is quite charming, but there are a few details that could be improved without significant expense, such as the garden, for example. In my opinion, the nightly rate charged does not correspond to what is offered. We stayed in the suite, but there were some minor issues that made it feel quite cheap. For instance, the bed had an old comforter placed underneath to make the mattress softer, the refrigerator was very small and old, producing a lot of noise, and there wasn't a coffee machine in the room in case you needed coffee when the staff was absent. Something that I really didn't like was the presence of tea bags in the room with a note stating that consuming them would incur a charge of €1.50 each. What disappointed us the most was the staff. We have traveled extensively and have never encountered anything similar, especially when visiting a small village and staying in a mansion where you expect warm and friendly people. Unfortunately, it felt like they were doing their job reluctantly. During breakfast, they were in the kitchen with their backs turned to the guests who were serving themselves. Lastly, the breakfast itself had many frozen items, which was unexpected as we were hoping to enjoy a traditional Greek breakfast. It was very poor in quality. However, the few handmade items they had, such as walnut pie and leek pie, were fantastic!

Our room had high ceilings and plenty space. Super clean. The common area is nicely decorated. There is a small garden which has a swing in it. Our son was enjoying it while we were drinking our coffee. Decent breakfast. Nice large balcony area with tables and chairs for breakfast. 5 minutes walk to Petra centre. Anaxos beach is 7 minutes by car. Would recommend it!

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Archontikl Petras. We stayed for 4 nights, and each morning we were treated by Marie with a wonderful, expansive and delicious breakfast that included many local favorites to try. Marie also kept our room spotless, helped us with our laundry, and changed our sheets and pillow cases in the middle of our stay (a great touch!). She also greeted us with fresh cold watermelon and ice water when we arrived to check in. The location of the property is perfect - bakery and coffee across the street, and many convenience, souvenir and restaurant shops within walking distance. The beach is also within walking distance and is beautiful. Highly recommend!

Beautiful property tucked away in a centrally located street walking distance to town and beaches. Great bakery for bread and coffee next door, and a close walk to many delicious restaurants and a variety of shops. The rooms are a nice size, with many accommodations (robes, slippers, outlet plugs, towels) and very clean. The breakfast food was expansive each morning, with many local options made fresh daily. Marie prepared the breakfast each morning, and took extra time to ensure she explained the local foods and that we tried all the freshest food options. She was also able to make us eggs to order each morning and provided fresh squeezed orange juice. Marie helped us with our laundry and told us about the best local restaurants. Overall, she was very careful to ensure we were having a wonderful time. She made us feel at home and we looked forward to her morning breakfasts each day! Highly recommend Archontiko Petras!
