About

Nestled in the charming fishing village of Skala Sykaminias on the northern coast of Lesvos, Gorgona Hotel offers visitors a welcoming base from which to explore one of the island's most atmospheric and storied corners. The village itself is celebrated as the setting of Stratis Myrivilis' beloved novel "The Mermaid Madonna," and the little harbour chapel that inspired that work sits just steps away, making Skala Sykaminias a place of genuine literary and cultural pilgrimage. Staying at Gorgona places guests right at the heart of this intimate, unspoilt community, where colourful fishing boats bob in the harbour and the pace of life moves to the rhythm of the sea.

The hotel provides comfortable accommodation — including rooms and apartment-style options — that suit both short stays and longer retreats. The northern coastline here is dramatically beautiful, with the Turkish coast visible across the narrow Aegean strait, and the surrounding landscape of olive groves and rugged hills rewarding those who venture inland. Whether you are arriving to walk the scenic coastal paths, sample fresh seafood at the village's celebrated tavernas perched over the water, or simply absorb the tranquil atmosphere that has drawn artists and writers for generations, Gorgona Hotel offers a convenient and characterful place to rest your head.

For travellers seeking an authentic Lesbian experience away from the busier resort towns of the south, Skala Sykaminias and its small selection of family-run accommodations like Gorgona represent the island at its most genuine. The warm hospitality typical of this corner of Lesvos, combined with the village's extraordinary natural and cultural setting, makes a stay here one of the more memorable choices available to visitors exploring the northern reaches of the island.

Before you go

What to expect

You wake to the sound of fishing boats heading out at dawn and the smell of salt air — the harbour is literally steps from the hotel. The small chapel that inspired Myrivilis' Mermaid Madonna is visible from the waterfront, giving this tiny village an unusually layered cultural weight. Evenings unfold at taverna tables jutting over the water, with the lights of the Turkish coast flickering across the narrow strait.

Best time to visit

Late May through September is ideal; early June and September offer warm weather with noticeably fewer visitors than the peak summer weeks.

How to get there

From Mytilene, drive north through the olive-grove landscape toward Mantamados and then down to the coast — allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half depending on your route and stops along the way.

Having visited Skala Sikamineas many, many, times for lunch over the years, we finally decided to spend the afternoon, evening and night in this charming village. Hotel Gorgona was recommended to us by a friend. Check-in and room assignment was quick and the process went smoothly. Being a couple with an adult son we got a suite with two bedrooms, a small room with a fridge, and a spacious bathroom. Everything was clean. The receptionist was really friendly and spoke English quite well, which is a good thing as my Greek needs some improvement. Breakfast was served to order outside on the terrace. Tasty! The area surrounding the village is excellent for hiking.

Lovely hotel, great location and comfy room. You can smell the jasmines next to your balcony in the evenings or watch the people go by in the square. But most of all, very kind and sincere owners who make you feel like friends🤍

Lovely hotel, recently renewed. The location is magical. You would need a car though to travel around. The owners are super friendly, they are fluent in German and of course Greek. No English. The rooms have a view and parking is available.
