About
Kalamies is a traditional Greek taverna set in the verdant inland landscape near Agia Paraskevi, one of Lesvos's most storied villages. The name, meaning "reeds," hints at the lush, water-fed surroundings that characterize this fertile corner of the island, far from the coastal bustle and closer to the rhythms of rural Lesbian life. Dining here means stepping into the kind of unhurried atmosphere that defines the Greek countryside at its best.
The kitchen draws on the rich culinary traditions of Lesvos, an island long celebrated for the quality of its olive oil, locally raised meats, and garden-fresh vegetables. Expect honest, generous plates rooted in the land — grilled meats, slow-cooked stews, and seasonal mezedes that reflect what is growing or grazing nearby. The setting around Agia Paraskevi is notable for its orchards and farmland, and that agricultural abundance finds its way naturally onto the table.
Visitors exploring the interior of Lesvos will find Kalamies a rewarding stop, particularly those making their way to or from the village's famous Taurokathapsia festival grounds or the nearby Petrified Forest museum. It offers a genuine taste of local hospitality — the sort of meal that lingers in memory not because of theatrical presentation, but because of its simplicity, warmth, and rootedness in place. For anyone seeking to understand Lesvos beyond its beaches, a table at Kalamies is a small but meaningful part of the picture.
Before you go
What to expect
Lunch at Kalamies unfolds at the pace of the Greek countryside — grilled meats, seasonal mezedes, and slow-cooked dishes arrive without rush, while orchards and reed-lined water channels give the terrace a stillness you won't find near the coast. It's the kind of place where locals linger over carafes of wine on a Tuesday afternoon, and that tells you everything.
Best time to visit
Spring through early autumn is ideal; the shaded setting keeps even midsummer middays comfortable.
How to get there
Agia Paraskevi is roughly a 20-minute drive from Mytilene, heading inland through the fertile valleys of eastern Lesvos; Kalamies sits within the village itself.

Fantastic traditional Greek cuisine! Local spot that I highly recommend! We enjoyed the white beans, calamari, Greek salad, tzaziki, spaghetti with eggplant tomato sauce (vegan), koukia beans (large butter beans) and chicken breast with french fries/rice.

I had to wait for a flight and decided to have a quick lunch in this restaurant which is quite close to the airport. It is not cosy, but clean and efficient. The food was fresh, tasty and at a good price. The staff are kind and polite. I could eat and return to the airport in 30 minutes (with a car).

After our flight had a delay we went for some food. We both decided we would like the cheese stuffed burger. When we tried to order the man who took the order said NO NO you can go to the macdonalds for that. Even it was on the menu. Very unfriendly man. Never again.
