Wonderful route, very easy access as there is a road very close to the waterfall and the walking is minimal. The sight is of course impressive as the visitor can get very close to the waterfall as he runs
A great destination to escape by combining hiking in the forest and taking wonderful photos!!!
About
Perched in the rugged northwestern reaches of Lesvos, near the quiet village of Lafionas, Klapados is one of the island's many hauntingly beautiful abandoned settlements. Like several villages across Lesvos, it fell silent over the course of the twentieth century as rural depopulation drew residents toward larger towns, the mainland, and distant shores. What remains today are stone walls slowly returning to the hillside, olive trees that once fed families now growing untended, and an atmosphere of layered time that draws thoughtful travellers seeking something beyond the beach.
Walking through Klapados, visitors encounter the particular melancholy and beauty unique to abandoned Aegean villages: doorways framing empty sky, cobblestone paths reclaimed by wildflowers, and the outlines of a community that once had its rhythms of daily life. The landscape around the site is characteristic of Lesvos's northwest, with views across scrubby hills and the occasional shimmer of the sea in the distance. It is the kind of place that invites quiet reflection on the island's complex modern history and the forces — war, poverty, migration — that shaped it.
For travellers exploring the area around Lafionas and the broader northwestern corner of Lesvos, Klapados makes for a rewarding short detour. It pairs naturally with visits to the nearby coast and the traditional villages of the region. Come prepared for uneven terrain and bring water; there are no facilities at the site. The reward is an unmediated encounter with vernacular architecture and a slower, more contemplative side of Lesvos that the island's more visited spots rarely offer.
Before you go
What to expect
Stone houses dissolving slowly back into the hillside, doorways open to empty sky, and cobbled paths threaded with wildflowers give Klapados a quality of suspended time that is hard to find elsewhere on the island. The untended olive groves that once sustained families here still cast shade over the ruins, and on a quiet afternoon you may have the whole place entirely to yourself. Come with good shoes and water — there are no facilities, and the ground is uneven throughout.
Best time to visit
Spring (April–May) is ideal when wildflowers bloom and temperatures are mild; the exposed site can be punishing in July–August heat.
How to get there
From Mytilene, head northwest toward the village of Lafionas — the drive takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half depending on the route you take. Klapados lies close to Lafionas and the final approach is on an unpaved track.

The road was bad. We drove until we reached 2.5 km before the stop, but after that it was a 40-minute walk, so unfortunately we gave up.

Drove from Petra, was not possible to drive the hire car up the track from that direction (for fear of damaging it!) so we parked at the bottom and walked. Walk was pretty steep (nearly all uphill on the way there) but lovely views, took about 25 mins. Not much to see at the village itself but was an enjoyable walk. We didn't walk on to the waterfall as it was a very hot day.

It's more of a historical site than a place where you'll see old, dilapidated houses. The on-site museum was closed, so there's nothing left to see. Also, not all access roads are accessible by car.
