Very well made Museum and they do get you thrilled about fossilization!!! I would never have thought… Beside it is a wonderful end of trail on Lesvos West coast. Absolutely beautiful scenery on the parc and perfect spot for a great sunset picture

About

A small but charming folklore museum in central Mesotopos dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage and traditional history of this picturesque village. It offers visitors an authentic glimpse into local customs and everyday life from Mesotopos' past.

Before you go

What to expect

A community-maintained space rather than a polished institution, this small museum fills its rooms with traditional tools, household items, and personal objects from Mesotopos' everyday past. Walking through it feels like stepping into the living memory of the village — each exhibit placed with obvious local pride. It rewards slow looking rather than quick walkthroughs.

Best time to visit

Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for visiting the western villages; summer works well if you are already touring the area.

How to get there

Mesotopos lies in the western part of Lesvos, around an hour's drive from Mytilene — head toward Kalloni first, then continue west into the hills.

Amazing and super friendly staff! When we arrived they gave us presentation of the geoheritage, and showed us around. Nicely arranged museum, offering a lot of information. They also have earthquake simulators for school kids (not tested but it sounds cool). Nice selection of merchandise if you are into souvenirs. One ticket covers museum and outdoor park, and is quite affordable (10 eur). A must see for anyone interesting in natural heritage. The whole landscape is something special, so it was definitely worth visiting.

The actual museum and exhibits are interesting. 10 euros entry which includes the distant Petrified Forest. Access involves a talk which is a good explanatory introduction. The museum exhibits are interesting- no photos - but the external Sigri Park site is disappointing. You have to go to the remote site to see the "trees" at their best.

Great visit! We loved the petrified trees and all items on display. Staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. We were greeted by Effie who navigated the bus load of people that had arrived with a smile, warm welcome and efficiency. We enjoyed the short seminar from a very informative Geologist who later also explained some of the exhibits and answered our questions. The cafe staff were so kind and fun to be around. We loved the products available for purchase. Highly recommend!

We had the chance to visit this museum! We got so lucky … the exhibitions, the way the natural elements were displayed, the museum layout and design, and the presentation from one of the people who worked in the museum, who had studied geology – everything was great! Highly recommend this museum! Note: Taking photos are not allowed in the museum.

I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The museum beautifully preserves and presents ~18 million years of natural history in a way that is both engaging and educational. With its thoughtfully designed indoor exhibits and breathtaking open-air displays nestled in the stunning mountainous landscape, the museum offers something meaningful for visitors of all ages. I highly recommend everyone, regardless of age or background, to visit this remarkable place and explore the wonders of our planet’s geological past.

Premise: absolutely first you must visit the museum and then visit the forest. The museum makes you understand how the trees got petrified, as well as showing you some of them. Outside there is a tour that lasts about 20 minutes where you can see these fossils in their natural environment. You will then have to go and visit a larger forest. I have been to the one about 5km north of the museum.

Amazing museum, shows every process of forming the greek islands and whole country. Many fossils, minerals, bones and much more. Great volcanos infographics. 5/5. If you went to petrified forest before you can enter here for free with tickets from forest.

This is such a well presented and curated museum and of the quality of museums in major cities including London in my opinion. Very impressively presented whoever is responsible. Not huge but plenty of information packed into the museum spaces. Thoroughly recommend visiting the museum before going to see the Petrified Forest so you can understand better what you are witnessing in the forest. Lots of information and exhibits not only about the forests and fossils but more broadly about geology and earthquakes, tectonic plates etc.
