Mystakelli Traditional Dairy Products
Γαλακτοκομικά Μυστακέλλης ΙΚΕ
Visitors say
A dairy that serves traditional Greek cheese. You sample the small cheeses offered for tasting and then choose the one you like. Prices are reasonable, credit cards are accepted. They understand a little Turkish.
The cheeses were delicious, we had the opportunity to taste them. We bought quite a few cheeses. I know that the vacuum-packed ones don't spoil and you can take them on long journeys.
About
Nestled in the verdant hills near Mandamados, one of northern Lesvos's most storied villages, Mystakelli Traditional Dairy Products is a testament to the island's deep-rooted pastoral heritage. The region's sheep and goats graze freely across hillsides fragrant with wild thyme, sage, and oregano, and that natural richness finds its way directly into the milk and the cheeses it yields. Lesvos has long been celebrated for its dairy traditions, and small producers like Mystakelli keep those traditions alive through time-honored methods passed down through generations of local families.
Visitors stopping here can expect to find authentic island cheeses and dairy specialties made with genuine care — think creamy, tangy local varieties shaped by hands familiar with the craft rather than by industrial processes. The ladotyri of Lesvos, a firm cheese aged and preserved in olive oil, has earned protected designation of origin status and stands as one of the island's proudest culinary exports, and producers in this area contribute to that living tradition. Whether you are looking to stock a picnic with something genuinely local or simply want to taste Lesvos as islanders have tasted it for centuries, a stop at a traditional dairy like this one is the kind of experience that no supermarket can replicate.
For the traveler who appreciates knowing where their food comes from, Mystakelli offers a direct and honest connection to the Aegean landscape. It is the sort of quiet, unhurried place that rewards curiosity — a chance to exchange a few words with the people behind the product, to sample before you buy, and to carry something truly of Lesvos home with you. Pair a purchase with local bread and olives and you have the makings of a meal that captures the island's spirit far better than any restaurant menu could.
Before you go
What to expect
The shop is small and unhurried, its counter holding wheels and rounds of cheese made close by, with staff who will usually let you taste before you decide. The ladotyri — firm, salty, and preserved in local olive oil — is the one to seek out: the flavour carries the wild thyme and sage the animals grazed on. Bring a cool bag if you plan to keep driving; these cheeses are worth the care.
Best time to visit
Spring through early autumn is the ideal window; April and May are particularly rewarding, when the hillsides around Mandamados are most fragrant and that character comes through in the milk.
How to get there
Mandamados is about a 50-minute drive north from Mytilene along the main road toward the northern tip of the island; the village is well-signposted and easy to find.

Excellent shop with cheeses of unique quality! A wide variety of fine, fresh and traditional cheeses, with flavors that really stand out. The quality is evident in every taste. Packaged for easy transport by plane. The staff is very kind, knowledgeable and always willing to recommend the right product with love and passion. A shop that honors tradition and is absolutely worth a visit. I will definitely prefer it again!

Great little cheese shop! You can taste before you buy, and the prices are really reasonable. Just a heads-up: the shop is currently in the building behind the one you first see — use the left door. The building in front is where their new shop will be soon!

They have a wide range of cheeses. The prices are similar to Turkiye's. The staff was careful when explaining their products. On the other hand, their cheeses looked so fatty to me. They were a bit dense. While their cheeses have more protein, with a higher than 20% protein content, their fat proportion is above 30%. So they were too heavy for me to eat.
