About

The Church of Panagia Glykofilousa crowns a massive volcanic rock that rises sheer from the centre of Petra, reached by 114 stone steps carved into the cliff face. Built in 1609 and rebuilt in 1747, the church offers what may be the most spectacular views on Lesvos — across red-tiled rooftops, the Aegean, and the northern coastline. According to legend, a sea captain placed an icon of the Virgin Mary in the church, but it repeatedly disappeared and was found atop the rock, until the villagers understood that the Madonna wished to remain at the summit. The church celebrates its major feast on August 15th, the Dormition of the Virgin, when pilgrims climb the steps in candlelit procession. At the base of the rock, the Church of Agios Nikolaos contains important 16th-century wall paintings.

Before you go

What to expect

Climbing 114 steps cut into the sheer volcanic rock is itself a small act of devotion — narrow, exposed, and quietly exhilarating as the village rooftops and the Aegean slowly open below you. The church at the summit is intimate, but the views across the northern coastline are anything but. Before or after the ascent, the Church of Agios Nikolaos at the base of the rock holds 16th-century wall paintings that reward a slow look.

Best time to visit

August 15th brings a candlelit pilgrimage procession up the steps for the Dormition feast — one of the most atmospheric nights on the island; outside that, May, June, and September offer cooler air for the exposed climb.

How to get there

Petra is roughly an hour's drive north of Mytilene along the coastal road through Kalloni. The volcanic rock towers over the village centre and is visible long before you arrive.
