About

Tucked into the heart of Plomari, the southern port town best known as the home of Ouzo Plomari, Farmakeio Andreas Varvagiannis serves as one of the community's essential stops for visitors and locals alike. As a traditional Greek pharmacy, it offers the full range of medications, health products, and over-the-counter remedies that travelers may need during their stay on the island, from sun protection and insect repellent to treatments for minor ailments that can arise during a busy holiday.

What sets a neighborhood farmakeio like this apart from a chain pharmacy is the personal, attentive service rooted in genuine community knowledge. Greek pharmacists are trained to a high standard and are widely relied upon for health advice, often serving as a first point of contact before a doctor's visit. Visitors exploring the Plomari area — whether day-tripping from Mytilini, hiking the surrounding olive-covered hills, or relaxing on the nearby pebble beaches of Agios Isidoros — can count on finding knowledgeable, helpful guidance here.

For travelers venturing beyond the island's capital, knowing the location of a reliable local pharmacy brings real peace of mind. Plomari itself is a rewarding destination, with its neoclassical architecture, working waterfront, and the iconic ouzo distilleries that have made the town famous across Greece. A stop at Farmakeio Andreas Varvagiannis fits naturally into any practical errand in town, and reflects the warm, human-scale character that makes exploring smaller Greek communities so rewarding.

Before you go

What to expect

Step inside and you get the unhurried, personal attention that defines a neighbourhood farmakeio: the pharmacist here knows the local context — summer heat, pebbly-beach scrapes, the odd stomach protest after a long ouzo lunch — and dispenses advice as readily as medication. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and remedies for common holiday ailments are all stocked and easy to find. It's the kind of practical stop that lets you get back to exploring Plomari's waterfront and distilleries without worry.

Best time to visit

Open year-round; most useful in summer when the nearby beaches fill up and holiday mishaps are at their peak.

How to get there

Plomari is about a 35-40 minute drive southwest from Mytilene; the pharmacy is in the town centre and easy to reach on foot from the harbour or main square.

We came on a day of duty and while it should be open from 8 to 8 it was closed at noon. I call and he tells me that we close at noon here on the island and in case of emergency we come (?). I emphasize on a day of duty!!! I informed him that I want a simple eye drop and he says I don't give it without a doctor's prescription. In Thessaloniki how do pharmacies give it to us without a prescription?? He told me to go to the health center for a simple eye drop because he simply didn't come down to his pharmacy to see me and it was closed ON A DAY OF DUTY. And let me say that in those minutes we were there 5 people came and the pharmacy was closed!!! His manner on the phone was unacceptable....he was rude and had no intention of coming down to open the pharmacy when it was mandatory.
