About this Beach
Tucked along the northern coast of Lesvos near the quiet village of Evaggelistria, Avlaki is one of those unhurried coves that rewards travellers willing to venture off the well-worn tourist trail. The beach is characteristically northern Lesvian in feel — a stretch of pebbles and coarse sand meeting the clear, deep-blue waters of the Aegean, framed by the rugged, sun-bleached hillsides that define this part of the island. The water here tends to be exceptionally clear, as is typical of Lesvos's less-frequented shores, and the rocky seabed in the shallows gives way to sandy patches further out, making it pleasant for swimming and snorkelling alike.
Facilities at Avlaki are minimal, which is precisely part of its charm. Visitors should come prepared with their own provisions, shade, and fresh water, as the beach sees little commercial development. The surrounding landscape carries the wild, aromatic character of the northern Lesvian interior — olive groves, dry scrub, and the ever-present scent of oregano and thyme — giving the whole place a sense of unhurried timelessness. Access typically requires navigating a local road, so a car or scooter is advisable.
The best time to visit Avlaki is from late May through September, when the Aegean is warm enough for comfortable swimming and the meltemi breeze keeps the heat pleasant rather than oppressive. Early summer is particularly rewarding, when the hillsides still hold traces of green before the full summer dry sets in. This is a beach for those who come to Lesvos seeking quiet communion with the sea rather than resort amenities — a small, honest corner of the Aegean where the day slows down and the water does most of the talking.
Before you go
What to expect
Avlaki is a quiet pebble-and-coarse-sand cove where the water is clear enough to see the rocky seabed through the shallows. There are no umbrellas for hire or beach bars, so visitors spread out on the stones with whatever they've brought, with the scent of wild herbs drifting down from the surrounding hillsides. Snorkelling along the rocky edges is particularly rewarding.
Best time to visit
Late May through September is the swim season; early June combines warm water with green hillsides and very few other visitors.
How to get there
From Mytilene, head north-east towards the village of Evaggelistria — the drive takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes. The final stretch follows a local road, so a car or scooter is essential.

One of my favourite places. Rarely crowded. Beautiful location sat on its own sandy beach. The sunset views are outstanding. Recommend the pork steak, but never had a bad meal. Love Avlaki ❤️

We came here twice for lunch and sunbeds on the beach. The food is excellent, freshest of fish, we had sardines and seabream both beautifully cooked and huge salad. Very friendly service, immaculately clean and views to die for. Free sunbeds, lovely small beach gently shelving into the sea. Our favourite beach in Petra and Anaxos.

“Absolutely delicious food, just like the traditional flavors of Lesvos from the old days. You can really taste the care and craftsmanship in every bite, with so much attention to handmade preparation. The taverna itself is in great condition, very well-maintained, and adds to the overall experience. Highly recommended!”

We were here a month ago for a great lunch. I almost feel guilty for not writing this sooner. Teo was an ambassador of exemplary service. Everything we ordered from the menu was made with care. The location right next to the sea is amazing and the retsina goes down pretty quickly in the setting. We had a wonderful time here and we are already looking forward to going back for more next time.
