About
Nestled in the quiet landscape near the village of Charamida in eastern Lesvos, the church of Saint Hermogenes is one of those intimate Orthodox sanctuaries that anchor rural Greek communities to their faith and history. Dedicated to Saint Hermogenes, a martyr venerated in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, the church reflects the deeply rooted religious culture of the Aegean islands, where even the smallest settlement maintains its own patron saint and place of worship. Like many such chapels across Lesvos, it likely follows the simple whitewashed stone architecture typical of the region, with a modest iconostasis screening the altar and oil lamps casting a warm glow over icons painted in the Byzantine tradition.
For visitors, the church offers a glimpse into the living spiritual life of Lesvos beyond the well-trodden tourist trail. Feast days honoring the patron saint draw local families together for liturgy, communal meals, and the kind of celebration — the panigiri — that has bound Greek villages together for centuries. These gatherings are among the most authentic experiences available to travelers on the island, combining religious ceremony with folk music, local food, and genuine hospitality. The surrounding area of Charamida, set amid the olive groves and rolling hills of eastern Lesvos, adds a layer of pastoral beauty to any visit.
Saint Hermogenes holds significance as a figure of steadfast faith, and churches bearing his name serve as reminders of the early Christian martyrs whose stories traveled across the Byzantine world and took root in local devotion. Whether you arrive during a feast day or simply push open the door during a quiet afternoon, this small church rewards the curious traveler with a sense of continuity — a community still tending its sacred spaces as generations have done before them.
Before you go
What to expect
This small whitewashed chapel sits quietly among the olive groves on the edge of Charamida, its interior scented with incense and lit by hanging oil lamps. You come here to slow down — to trace the faces in Byzantine-style icons and feel the stillness that rural Orthodox churches hold even when empty. On the saint's feast day, the panigiri transforms the churchyard into a gathering of local families sharing food and music.
Best time to visit
Spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant conditions; summers are hot but the shade of the surrounding olive groves provides some relief.
How to get there
Charamida is roughly a 20-minute drive east from Mytilene along the coastal roads of eastern Lesvos; the church is within the village itself.

Lovely place to visit and spend a day or afternoon by the sea. A bit out of the way, but good access and plenty of car parking right next to the restaurant. We ordered the squid and the octopus which both came from the kitchen very quickly. Plenty of variety of drinks in the fridges too, including cider for us Brits. Overall, good value and a clean beach. The water here offered good snorkeling, as there were plenty of rocky and grassy areas to hold fish and octopus 🐙.
